Well, really my exboyfriend built it, but I helped. And I painted it.
When I first started seeing my exboyfriend, I had a twin bed. The nights that he stayed over I got NO sleep, so I said to myself "I have to get a bigger bed or break up with him." HE volunteered to build me a bed, and I figured I wasn't going to come across an offer like that again.
The great thing about building my own bed was the customization. Since I store things under the bed, the mattress is 12" off the ground-lots of storage space. It took a weekend (in Jan 2007) and cost about $70, although it took 2 weeks to paint and the mattress cost $500. It's very sturdy, and generally perfect. And I didn't have to break up with my boyfriend.

I also made the quilt, but that's another story.

The glass knobs are salvaged from a flooded warehouse (I live in New Orleans). It took a lot of scrubbing, but they look great in the sunlight.

The trees are from a fairy tale that's called
The Worn-out Dancing Shoes. One tree is silver, another gold, and the third is diamond.

There's a different pattern painted on each of the four posts.
Every part of the bed is painted (this is the inside of the footboard)
EDITOh ooh I finally found the "in progress" pictures!

Here's the unpainted head and foot boards.

Here's the ex helping me put the thing together. (And you can see the curtains that I made shorts out of)

Here's a better photo of the headboard. I forgot to say that in these stripes, no color is repeated more than twice.

Here's the inside of the footboard. With the mattress and boxspring, you can only see the top 3 inches! This was the first pattern I painted on the bed, and like everything else, it was all hand-done, without a stencil.
Thanks to everyone for your nice compliments!
