Thanks, all! My suggestions:

Do go with a size or two larger hook, especially if you have larger hands.

Do block, even if you have to improvise! The lace really doesn't look the same otherwise!

Try to avoid a full-cotton yarn - something in a blend (especially with a little silk) really works better with this pattern.

Also, the pattern is written a little wonkily (it mixes up "Right" and "Left" hand instructions in the label only) but you should be able to figure it out. It's a small mistake.
