A gift for my sister's 18th birthday. She's a gamer girl and a bit of a geek. After a particularly hard year (toe tumors and hospital stays), I thought she needed a warm 'n fuzzy hug. So I gathered a couple of her shirts, a couple of mine, and one of my fiance's. He embroidered a couple of squares (see the squid and the crab--his first embroidery projects ever). I enlisted some of her friends to help me pick out the perfect kawaii characters. My mom and I picked out most of the fabrics together, and the green and white floral bits came from my late Grammy's stash. It was a bit of a process, but in the end I think it came together quite nicely, and I love that it has a little bit of everyone sewn into it.

I'm pretty sure she liked it. Smiley

This may be my favorite quilt I have ever seen.

Your use of shirts is so clever!
& that is pretty awesome embroidery for a first time ever.

I love that different people put something into it for her too.
Awesome work.
This rocks.

I...LOVE IT! Kawaii is currently a big obsession with me.  Grin

Sewing a little bit of everyone in there is the best way to make a blanket into a treasure, too. When she goes off to school or whatever she plans on doing with her life, she'll have a warm family hug every time she cuddles up with it.

How long did it take for you to make it?

I love that your fiance embroidered some squares, too. The squid and crab turned out great! I love the toilet paper and poo squares myself. Great work!

Very nice! It looks very neatly done, and the sort of thing any self respecting gamer-girl would love on her bed. Smiley

Thanks to everyone for the kind words! I'm glad you all like it! What an awesome welcome to an awesome forum.

Now to answer some questions. The main squares are 12" X 12" (the little squares are 6" X 6" and the stripes vary in width) and the quilt itself is just over 5' X 7'.  I started gathering my supplies in January and my sister's birthday is the first of March (and I was sewing right up until her party because I have a bit of a problem with procrastinating!). So, from planning stages to final stitch, it took right around seven weeks, with the majority of the work done in the last 2 or 3.

It's super cool and original.  I love it when people take something that's super mass-produced and computery like video game characters and make them hand-crafted and original.
