I know it's not halloween, but I'm wearing a costume in public anyway. Every year there's this insane parade out on Coney Island in NYC called the Mermaid Parade and people come dressed as (you guessed it) MERMAIDS!!!! Well they really come dressed as lots of things its more of a "Let your freak flag fly" day then an actual structured parade. For pics of the insanity click here but be warned there will be boobs! A bunch of friends and I decided to march this year and I had to make an awesome costume. I'm a bellydancer by night (and a fancier by day but don't tell anyone I have such a normal job) so I decided to combine a bellydancer and a mermaid and this is what I came up with.

I made the tail out of some lame fabrics, the base is textured and the bottom is simply a pleated triangle (no shaping needed) and I stuffed it with aqua tulle to give it a full look.
The top is a bra that I cut the straps off and replaced with sequined elastic trim to create a halter. Then I individually glued the sequins to the bra cups and sewed on the chains and pearls. I also had the center beads on jump-rings and the pearls side bits are sewn to the bra and strung on that elasticized jewelry wire (it's plastic I don't know the real name for it)

(Me and craftster user Molliemoo2883)
I also made her a tail out of sateen fabric and stuffed the bottom of it with tee-shirts for weight. She made her shirt with puff paint and my mom's help

Thanks for looking!

1)You look beautiful! Fantastic, fresh and summery costume, very mermaid-ish. 2)I looked through those pictures, and I understand why you have that look on your face in the second pic.  Shocked I have to look up this Mermaid Parade thing. "Let your freak flag fly" indeed! Looks like it was an amazing and crazy day for sure.

what a fun idea ^_^ unfortunately the link is blocked by my work's firewall... no parade pics for me Sad
your top came out wonderfully! I've been meaning to try this for a couple of years now (doing the bra conversion) but i get a little panicky when i think about sewing Wink I have however been hoarding embellishments for whenever i get up the nerve to try! if you 've made other costumes, i'd love to see.

If you can get on flickr just type "mermaid parade 2008" as a tag and tons of pics should pop up.
For a bra conversion I love this flickr set and found it very helpful

We sat around that night and looked through flicker pics and a few of her we taken by other people. I took the first one but she was very popular. We walked along the beach after the parade and a little girl ran up to her and asked if she knew the little mermaid. It was really cute.
