Are japanese patterns difficult to follow? It really does look like a work of art!

The Japanese pattern books I own are illustrated in a step by step fashion and the measurements are in numbers, not kanji, so they're pretty easy to follow.
Still, the explanations are in Japanese and it may not be the best choice for someone who has never sewn a garment before.
