I had always wanted to try needlepoint or cross-stitching. I knew I would need to do something simple to get used to the craft, but this was NOT a simple choice hahaha. I'm not sure what we call needle work done on plastic canvas, does it have a separate term other than just cross stitching?

Anyhow, the story behind this is that one of my dearest friends has been stationed in Iraq for over 1 year and I wanted to make him something special to send out there. He and I met through our love for the bands The Misfits and Samhain so I thought a good nerdy tribute to that would be an unexpected Misfits logo.
I didn't use a pattern, just drew the Misfits skull right on the canvas with a sharpie. The left side of the skull is a bit deformed because I got way too carried away with the cheekbone but I think the rest is as good a resemblance as I could get considering the medium, hehe.
My next plastic canvas project - a portrait of Morrissey!

HEY! I did that on a sweatshirt for my husband's birthday. I will see if I can get a picture for ya if you want to see my results... Smiley Mine took me like a year, but I was younger and lazier back then... I love the colors on your canvas.

I'd love to see yours, funkensteins! Mine took me at least 9 hours total probably. I spent much of my early teens cutting logos out of shirts or patches and then sewing them to something else so this sort of OCD project was bound to happen eventually, heh =)

Thanks for all the compliments everyone!

Ok, Here it is:
This was completed in 1998, but started in 97. I was a brand new mom in addition to be young and lazy, so I do have a little excuse there!

My now ten year old kid borrowed my camera to make a claymation video, and now my camera doesn't work, so that was the best picture I could get. but it is all counted cross stitch, and I used some sort of washable grid stuff my mom gave me that you can do all the stitches, and then wash it away so the cross stitch is left on the fabric. The sweatshirt is pretty raggedy by now, but I think it adds to the whole aesthetic! I am so glad you posted this, It is giving me sweet young married life memories.

Much luck to your friend! Can't wait to see Morrissey

Edited to add:
Here I cropped that photo so you can see the stitching better:
Thumbnail so I don't hog up any more of your post:

Oooh I love yours, Funk. The skull looks exactly like the real logo  Wink
I need to find some of this wash-away grid you speak of. The plastic canvas is nice and nostalgic 70s feeling but it can be so damn bulky.

After I made that I asked craft stores for it all the time trying to find it, but no one ever knew what I was talking about, and my mom didn't remember where she got it.... Well, I just did a quick search to see if I could find it online (That was all way back before we had a computer, hell, we didn't even have webtv yet!  Cheesy)
Anyway, I found this:
http://www.dmc.com/majic/pageServer/1l010002ar/en/soluble-canvas.html?nid=11;1460

I think that is it, but I don't know for sure! It is a start anyway! Smiley

Funk- That canvas looks very promising, apparently that company has its products sold at JoAnn fabrics and a bunch of other stores, I'm definitely going to see if I can find some of it. I'll let you know if it works well.

Vulvaline- Why thank you! I adore your wallets and wrist wallet creations.
