Oh my gosh oh my gosh oh my gosh!

I bought a corner shelf a few years ago - plastic, gold, incredibly tacky, yet I loved it.  I was going to turn it upside down over my antique cast iron bed, hang some fabric from it like a princess thingy (I really should know the name for that).  I just never could get past the gold, it's just so over the top.  This is a perfect solution!

Question: Does the plastic retain the paint?  I have images of peeling...you know, it's impossible not to tear paint that comes off in nice strips...

I know exactly what you mean about peeling paint. I always use too much paint on my palettes just so that I can peel it all of when I'm done.
For these I couple base coats of Gesso before I put the actual color on. Then when I was done with the colors I put a sealer varnish. I'm sure spray paint would be way easier and probably even more durable but I just wanted more control over the hues. Good luck with your shelf project!

This is also one of my favorite things to do!!  I'm always amazed at how cool some of those old things look when painted a bright fresh color.  Yours look great, I love that shade of orangey-red!
