One of my closest friends that I worked with in Japan is in town for the US long wknd. I haven't seen her since I left 2 yrs. ago so I wanted to make her a little gift that she could use.

She had mentioned awhile back that she's been on a search for a messenger bag that is a bit more professional looking that she could carry to work (in lieu of a purse and lunch bag).

I made this messenger bag with a wide base (4 inches) so that there would be lots of room for food! There are 3 slot pockets inside for pens/pencils and one for a cellphone. I added a magnetic purse snap to the flap and the strap is adjustable so that she can carry it on one shoulder, or lengthen the strap and carry it slung across her body.

It's beautiful and looks extremely professional!  I'm sure she'll love it!  How did you do the adjustable strap...with D rings or a slide?

Thanks!

runnermom: I used a D-ring and a plastic adjustable buckle (similar to the ones that you'd see on a backpack strap).

mhills: I made up the pattern as I went along Smiley

That is awesome. I really love it. Great fabric too! If it were in a store I would totally buy it. I really need to make an actual bag instead of a tote. Cheesy

This bag is amazing.  My very very simple sewing skills are envious of you obviously professional level skills....

great job!!!!  Your friend is very lucky, and I think she will be proud to carry this to work. It does look professional, and would easily fit into the work place

Gorgeous!!!  What kind of interfacing do you use?  It looks like it holds up very well.

threegirlsandaboy: I used medium weight iron on interfacing. I usually buy it in the drapery section because it is 60" wide so it ends up being cheaper than if I bought the regular 45" wide type Smiley

that fabric is amazing, question, where do you get your tags? I've tried to find come but can only find places where you have to buy like $100 worth at a time

letmysoulshine: The final dimensions were around 12 inches high x 13 inches wide. The base was 4 inches wide. It ended up being one of the larger messenger bags that I've made Smiley

Cardine1492: I made alot of my labels using a regular inkjet printer and printable fabric (that's not the product name but I can't think what it is....it's sold in boxes of 3 or 4 near the t-shirt transfers) from Joanns. Here is a tutorials that I used to make them:
