Babar the Elephant is one of my all-time favorite children’s books. I loved it back when i was little, still love it today, and long before i started this project i knew for a fact my sister really really loved it, too.

The story of Babar goes somewhat like this:
As a little baby elephant Babar becomes an orphan but makes reliable friends – both humans and animals – and grows up to become king of Elephant Country and to marry Céléste, the elephant-girl of his dreams.

Past, present, and future in mind i decided to embroider this scene - showing Babar and his kids - for my ds’s 30th birthday:

I used this illustrated book cover as a model:

Here are some detail shots:
Babar carrying a piglet and a pigeon - for good luck and peace.

and a close-up:

Flora, Babar's daughter with a bunny (yay, bunnies!!  Grin)

Alexander and Pom, his sons, enjoying nature:

More nature:

And a farm:

on the wall:

And finally, one shot showing how well everything goes with ds’s furniture!

I embroidered this using the freezer-paper-method, and yeah, i had a good deal of tearing out to do. It truly is a brilliant method though, especially when you want to get lots of details onto rather tender fabric.

Having said this I really really want to thank everyone on the needlework board, especially my swap partner onthinice! – the beautiful work, shared prowess and experience of all of you are very inspiring and a huge help. In fact you all encouraged me to take on an embroidery project like this in the first place!  Smiley

Hope you enjoy, and thanks for looking!

xx

We recently found Babar on Qubo, which is an unfamiliar channel to me, but the kids love it! We're in ND, so maybe it's a Canadian channel? Anyway, I'm glad they enjoy the show so much, since I did too as a kid Smiley These are really cute and timeless.

I was channel searching a while ago and came upon the Babar on Qubo which was on my local ION station. It was so much simpler when there was only 3 stations... It seems like in the past year 3-4 stations changed identities.
