My mom has been saving Birdseed bags and Dogfood bags for me to make these...they're definitely a conversation-starter!  I use scrap fabrics to line them, usually a thicker dark fabric if I've got it, or felt might even work.  The red "Old Roy" bag has black corduroy on the inside  Cheesy  and the handles are made from clear aquarium tubing.  I made myself a blue one with a cell-phone pocket on the side, and it's now my favorite bag!

The pattern was traced from a "market bag" that I bought years ago when I was in Mexico...I really like the rounded-bottom shape.  It's only three pieces sewn together (the bottom and sides are one long rectangle), plus the lining.  I posted a blog a week or so ago which has a few more photos of different variation, plus additional info on how I attach the handles---

I'm a bit addicted to making these ...I've got two others started, and I'm trying to find some cat food bags to try next  Smiley  Of course, I sometimes really have to scrub the bags to get the oils off them...most pet foods have some terrible stuff in it  Tongue

---- added 7-8-08 ------------

and I finished these this morning...

lol!   Cheesy  I suppose If I didn't wash the bags well enough, they would still smell like dog chow...I would have a bunch of hungry puppies following me around!

I just realized this might fit into the "reconstructed" category?  Hmmm.  Either way, I hope you all enjoy them  Grin

haha, I'm sure they don't smell to humans! Cheesy They're so cute, what a clever way to recycle.

When crafts fit in multiple categories, feel free to post in whichever category you choose. Usually it depends on which way you want to convo to go, if you are more interested in talking bags or recycling, although normally it'll all come up anyway.

Thanks for sharing this, and great job!

Wow, how cool is that! Love those bags.

I've tried making something similar a while ago (using paper from magazines), but it didn't come out half as good as your bags. Very good job  Smiley

Thanks for clarifying batgirl Smiley

Well, I suppose I'm not really worried about people "stealing" ideas from me...if other people wanna give it a try themselves, more power to them  Cheesy

It's taken me awhile to get good at it (and still usually takes me close to 2 hrs to make one of  these), but there are probably other similar ways to make them as well. Feel free to experiment!!
