So... I made this squid in last semester's Three-Dimensional Design class (I'm working towards a BFA). It was a months-long process. The assignment was to create a relief sculpture out of oil clay with a area of 4x4 inches. My idea was to do a squid and I got special permission to do three separate sculptures to execute my "artistic vision", haha. Let me just say that 12 square inches of cast iron is HEAVY!!! I had to lug it home in my purse on the subway... not ideal.

The oil clay was weird to work with. My art teacher made it himself.  It smells like motor oil and doesn't dry out. After we made the sculptures we made a mold for the casting out of some kind of weird green sand that hardened. I was there for the iron pour, we did a midnight iron pour party for our class and poured red hot iron into all the molds. It was very exciting and fun to watch... like fireworks!!

After the iron cooled we had to sand down all the extra iron attached to the sculpture and clean it up a bit. I had pictures of the mold and the iron pour on my phone but I lost it... so I hope these pictures of the finished product suffice Smiley

Here we go....

for scale:

I hope you like! It's one of the most favorite things I've ever made Smiley Let me know Smiley

EDIT:

Oh! I found a picture of the original clay sculpture before I cast it in iron!!

EDIT v2.0:

OH MY GOD!! I'm a featured project?!? Shocked Shocked

THANK YOU SO MUCH YOU GUYS! You have no idea how happy that made me!! Thank you, thank you, thank you, from the bottom of my heart. I love you guys on Craftster so much!!!

Thanks guys!  I dont know what I am going to do with it yet. As of now it is sitting on a table in my art corner. I would like to put it in a shadowbox or some kind and mount it on the wall? It is really heavy though.... mounting it on a wall might be a problem.

It is starting to form tiny spots of rust.... from the moisture in the air, my boyfriend said. (I live in Georgia, USA.)  So I would like it to enclose it somehow to slow down this process.

Thanks so much you guys Smiley

wowza!! this is excellent!! waay cool!

I made a clamp once in shop class that is pretty rusted away now, but if you rub a little lubricant on it, like oil, that will prevent the rust, and later on you can put a sealant to protect it.

the work you did is really unique.. I hope you find a great way to display it

Working with molten metal is so exciting - I'll never forget how hyped-up I got when we poured our aluminium sculptures in school.  Too bad you lost your pictures...you'll just have to do more  : ) obviously you have a talent for it.

I really liked the way you broke it up into pieces.  I'm sure it wouldn't have had as much interest, even though it's very lovely, if it had been just one slab.  Good instincts!

Actually, I just had to come back and add -  "Holy shit! Your squid is so amazing!"  to qoute vezataeli.  How often does one hear a compliment like that?!  LOL!  I love craftster.

Take it from a Pirate.. This Rocks.
So I have stamped squids into leather work, but I a in awe of the cast iron.
What can be cooler than an Iron squid.

Also for owning lots of metal that rusts (swords mainly) you can either keep it oiled (which is time consuming), or just seal it with a can of clear metal sealer (I use Krylon's sealer).

Keep up the great work.

It is beautiful, can you encase it in resin?Huh That way you could incorporate a hanger and then you could hang it? It would be a crying shame to have it rust up on you.
