NEW improved stencil press technique ***TUTORIAL*** having some foil fun!!

Commissioned by my best crafty pal.
My pieces all cut and laid out. I run this sheet thru pasta machine to make smooth, cabachons is my end goal. Before pressing with stencil, I bulk it up with scrap clay sheet on the back.
I scored these awsome stencils from a scrap booking catalog. The small holes surrounding cutouts is AWSOME for keeping my blunt tip tool from slipping as I work around cut out opening!! I press and press in each hole around, see how the piece bows up? Spilling my cabachon secrets, better love me ya all!!
Sliced flush from stencil, see how it has a bowl shape?
I do again with plain black one for the back. Sandwich front and back together, place a wire loop in where needed.
this one I used small cutter for hole instead of wire loops.
small circle
I did not use a stencil for these, I did use a cookie cutter tho. If you lay down a sheet of plastic wrap before cutting with stencil, it will make it bow a little. I cut plain black ones for the backs.
scraps on bic ink pen
Hope ya all like my creations!!

Very nice!
(Black plus any metallic or neutral color always looks so
classy
too.)
I'm glad you showed in your finished "pieced sheet" a number of
different amounts
of crackling too so Craftsters can see that it's possible to get almost
any
degree of crackle --from almost no crackling with the background clay hardly visible, to a point where the crackles are really just small flakes widely spread out on the base clay.
Did you show in one of your previous photos how the look of the crackling can be affected also by crackling only in
one direction
for all of the passes so that the crackles get long and skinny instead of staying more the same width and height?
There are just so many possibilities with crackling, especially considering that some paints and even clear finishes can be crackled on raw clay just like metal leaf. Really fun, and a lot of bang for the buck too!
P.S. If anyone doesn't have a metal stencil to use for making cabachons and other domed shapes, you can also shape your flat clay piece over a round or oval/etc. form, or just a curved form, while it's baking to make it domed. For example, round forms might be marbles or wood balls, the back side of a paint-mixing tray well, etc... or curved forms could be glass jars/mugs/glasses or even just a rolled up cylinder of paper (held closed with tape or glue)**.
As Gina said, you can also get a nice rounded
edge
around the shape when using a regular cutter by putting a piece of plastic wrap, etc., over it first... or you can just round the edge by dragging a finger around it.
**all kinds of interresting shapes can be made from patterned (or plain or embellished) clay sheets or cutouts by draping them over one or more bits of rolled-up paper, or over other things like knitting needles/etc... in fact, even tapered or multiple-wavy shapes can be made that way
