You can directly thank, or blame, beadizzygrl for this 'tutorial'.
I got the idea from this
thread. Like a lot of people, I fell in love with the Companion Cube after playing the game 'Portal', by Valve. I started making them last November and I haven't stopped since. After seeing Grrl's Alien, I just had to give a Companion Cube cane a try. She has taught me so much and I learned a lot. She has also made me a cane addict! I am reluctant to call this a tutorial because the mistakes I made are well documented. PLEASE feel free to give me better ways of doing things! I'm learning too, as you can see.
Lets get started.
Materials. I didn't use anything in this pic except for the blade and the clay. The other cutters are things you can use to get circles or hearts if you're not comfortable doing them by hand. I also used a pasta machine, but you can use a roller if you don't have one. The clay colors are dark gray, light gray, hot pink and light pink. Yes, I know the cube is almost white but the ones that I made lighter always look dirty to me. So I go with gray.
First thing we need is a cube! Grab your glob of dark gray clay and start to mold it into a cube shape. I use my hands at first, then a flat object to square it off. I then cut it into four equal shapes.
The center of the cube is a circle with a heart, so I used the slicing blade held in a U shape to take a corner off of each piece. You then have the beginnings of a cube!
Now a tricky part, at least for me, the hot pink stripe. It will probably be even harder to explain! I placed the side of the cube on a rolled out piece of hot pink clay for sizing and cut the piece to match. I then trimmed it down a bit lengthwise, because a gray piece will go beside it. The pic will give a better explanation.
Then do the same thing with the light gray, only this time making a thin strip to set alongside the hot pink. Do this on all sides.
Now for the heart. Make a little light pink log, and slice it across the top. Basically you are making a heart cane. Spread the top the whole way down the length of your cane and round the edges. On the opposite site, pinch the whole way down the length of the log to make the bottom point on the heart.
Then fill in the top and sides with small logs of light gray clay, then wrap it with light gray that has been run through the pasta machine on a medium setting and roll. You should then have a heart cane! it should be about as thick as the hole through the center of the cube.
Now we put it all together. The point of the heart should point straight between two of the pink strips, which you can see I forgot to do!
Now for the corners, and this is where I messed up. I didn't make them big enough and should have cut off more. Slice off the corners of the cube. They will be replaced with light gray clay. Make a light gray square and cut of the corners, the same size as the ones you removed from the dark gray. Put the slices on the cube.
Now the fun part. Pinching, pulling, flattening. Let's reduce! I start out turning the cane on each side and flattening with my hands
Then I pull with 2 hands, a little at a time. Then I go back to flattening, repeating the process over and over.
Let's slice this baby and see what we have! It was here I discovered my corners were too small, my hot pink was too thick and my heart was a little crooked. I'll know for next time!
I cut a piece off and reduced it more, to use for charms.
My other cubes are happy to have more in the family!
