This was my favourite project to date; and not as scary as I imagined.

The pattern is available at http://knitty.com/ISSUEspring06/PATTnautie.html ; I see there's been a knitalong for it, I'm not surprised, it is very cool.

I was working on this on the underground (subway) once, and had a friendly argument with a guy about why it wasn't a snail; a rare incidence of human interaction on the tube. I also lied and said it was a bet, because I was embarrassed to admit I was such a nerd Smiley

Have you ever seen nautiluses swimming? They move through the water with a surprisingly graceful rocking movement.

P.S. I hope it's OK me posting a new thread for this, I'm still a bit confused by the structure of Craftster posts.

Aw man, I love the stripes! Good job.

Oh, and don't worry - I, too, am guilty of having fabricated the occasional bet/dare/contest to account for whatever socially awkward thing I was knitting or crocheting in public at the time. :]

ohhh good job!  I seen it and was hoping it was a crochet pattern for it.  I have been looking all over for a free nautilus crochet pattern!

One does not simply walk into Mordor. Its black gates are guarded by more than just orcs. There is evil there that does not sleep. The great eye is ever watchful. It is a barren wasteland, riddled with fire, ash, and dust. The very air you breathe is a poisonous fume.......

hmmm... there's a crochet nautilus on gooseflesh (I love the stuff there): http://hellejorgensen.typepad.com/photos/artcraft/flickrcephalopod.html though no pattern
if you feel very diy, http://supernaturale.com/articles.html?id=277 might help in figuring out your own way of doing one - I've promised myself I'll attempt it at some point

Thankyou to everyone for the lovely comments Smiley

that is so cute- welcome to craftster!
it's good that you can pull of the 'i'm not a geek, it was just a bet' thing. i made an amino acid strand bracelet and wore it to school, and everybody was like, "wow, that's really nerdy." and I was like... "um... i like science... and i was bored, so..."
