I just used some cotton I found in the remnants basket at Joanns. It's honestly a bit thick for a handkerchief, more napkin-type.

I drew the dolls myself, though I had to make a cardboard cutout of the general shape a bunch of times(it just wasn't coming out right. Too skinny, too fat, not symmetrical.). 

I don't really use hankies much, either, I just stick them in my sleeve with the embroidery hanging out. Or out of the pocket of a dress. Or sticking out of the top of a small bag. They're honestly more for show than anything.
