My husband is going to Alaska for the summer to work on a barge. I was thinking of a way that I could "keep" him around for our one year old daughter. I played around with the idea and came up with the Daddy doll. I used this pattern for dolly hugs and then modified it for his big head.

I've never made a doll before so I think I did pretty good. I made him a little outfit out of some scraps and gave him hair with felt. Here he is:

Awee... what a great idea! I'm sure this is something a lot of military families could appreciate, too.

Oh that is so disturbing and cool at the same time - it reminds me of America's funniest home videos when they put the host guy's face on people's bodies and he makes all those funny faces.
I just love it all around!
I wish I would have had your imagination a few months ago when a friend of mine's husband went to Iraq... her kids have been missing their daddy something fierce.  He should be coming back sometime this month so I wouldn't even get to do something like that... although.... they think he might be going back soon... okay... not that I wish he would go away but he is the only one I know that is going away for longer than a few days.....

fantastic job - and a great heirloom!

OK, this is strange.......the other day I came across the Daddy Doll surfing;

FYI this one is of deploying daddys (or even mommys) for the armed service.

This is just one of the many dolls and patterns I found.  I think this is a wonderful idea cause back when we were younger my brother knew my Dad as the picture on the wall.  It took him along time to realize daddy was real.

ok, I agree that the doll itself is kinda scary in a very, very loving way.  However, this has totally inspired me to make a whole family...  I LOVE IT...and hitting "this rocks" for such a great idea for your daughter.

Thank you! I agree with the scary factor. I gave my husband a choice between doll bodies. The very doll like one that he choose and a stockier more manly doll body. He wanted the doll body because it would be "cooler". The human head on the doll body is just plain weird but he loves it and so does my daughter. The first time she saw it she grabbed it and kissed it. She totally recognizes it as daddy which is uber cute.

Good luck with the family of dolls.

wow very cool. I'm glad that someone else came up with that idea too. I didn't even try looking for something when I came up with my idea. I just looked for doll patterns to use. I thought of making one for a friend of mine's baby because the dad is in Iraq. Though he's coming home only 3 weeks after the baby is going to be born.

Wow, that is a great idea and it looks like your little one really likes it!  What did your husband have to say about being made into a doll?  Cheesy
