I want to color some details/shading to basic acrylic craft felt and was wondering what the best medium for that would be... some kind of paint? or chalks, maybe? I'm going for soft fading color... is there anything that will work on acrylic felt?

Thanks bunches!

In Sewing tiny toys the author uses mostly acrylic felt and just regualr fabric or acrylic paint mixed with a fabric medium. I think with small brushes or sponges you could easily do what you are wanting. Just take your time and go slowly and carefully. And have an extra piece or two ready for if you mess up. Smiley

Acryllics with textile medium would work well, but they might make the felt feel hard and crusty (but I'm not sure on this has I haven't painted on felt).  I'm pretty sure you could use art pastels for colouring on felt, and oil pastels, too, for that matter (though that may give a bolder look than what you're after).  I don't know if the pastels would be permanent if you had to wash the item, but they would definitely give that soft look you described.

I've never dyed acrylic felt, myself... but I have some pincushions i designed, that required special colors of a wool felt blend that I could not find easily in town.

I ended up buying white or off white, depending on the colors I wanted, and RIT. Any fabric dye would work.

When I need a varied pattern, like mimicking the variations in a rind, I'll mix the dye with little water in a darker consistency and sponge it on. That part of the technique might be useful to you. If you use a brush, and the dye.

I would say watercolors, watered even more... but if the item were to get wet later, it might be a  problem.

I can't promise this would work on acrylic... but, it's worth a shot.
