For a long time I've been admiring the talent and creativity of all you craftsters, but have never actually posted anything of my own. So I figured it was about time.... I am hardcore into Fashion Design, and I will be attending Kwantlen University next year, to obtain my Bachelor of Design in Fashion Design and Technology (phew, what a mouthful). To get into Kwantlen, I had to compose an ENORMOUSLY labour-intensive portfolio, which included fashion croquis, 10 self-sewn garments, a fashion journal, computer skills, life skills, and art skills. these photos are of a few of the garments I submitted with my portfolio. There is a mixture of garments I designed from scratch, garments I designed by manipulating patterns, and garments sewn from a pattern. I hope you enjoy....

I made this for a Gogol Bordello Concert I went to in Seattle! It was inspired by the album art for their 2 most recent albums: Super Taranta, and Gypsy Punks

The backview shows the yoke, shaped like the Gypsy Punks slingshot

I designed these both... the shirt is made out of a light sweatery knit, the skirt is out of Chinese Brocade.

Stretch satin nightgown, sewn from a New Look Pattern.

LOTR inspired skirt, and knit top.

Petal Collared sweater, which I designed by making 19 changes to an existing pattern.

Sam is wearing a dress I smocked, and a cropped eyelet blouse, made from a pattern.

High Waisted Double Breasted "jeans"!!! One of my favorite pieces!

back view of the jeans... pintucked pockets and slot zipper.

This lined wool coat was made from a Simplicity pattern. I lined it in Pink satin, and bought these $5 apiece buttons from the Button Lady... she has one of the largest button collections in North america.

wow, thanks! The photoshoot was lots of fun... me and a couple friends went to my elementary school, and basically hammed it up!, haha. good luck on your own fashion line! My advice to you when you are shooting your garments is take LOTS of frames... the more you take, the more likely you are to get an amazing shot! not that i am a professional or anything CLOSE... maybe one day.

am I excited?? YES!! Oh my god, I can't wait. It's great to hear from someone who goes to Kwantlen! How did you find first year? I am assuming you are in the Fashion design program... please correct me if I am wrong. I was told first year focuses a lot on channeling creativity, etc... so I am really curious as to what I will be doing in class next year!

I've learned so much, but prepare to work your life away. It will seriously be the hardest you've ever worked in your life (and it gets harder every semester), and you'll have no/very little time to do much else. The instructors aren't as hard on the students in the first year and they say that it's the year where you're allowed to make mistakes. It gets tougher in the second year when the instructors get extremely nit-picky about your work. It's not uncommon to see students crying in the hallways, unfortunately. Also, instructors (especially the design and drawing instructors) really emphasize on process. Process counts almost as much as the final product, and we have sketchbooks to record everything (and I mean EVERYTHING) that we hand in at the end of the semester.

Anyway if you want to know more, just private message me.
