(Back in High School my boyfriend used to "find" all kinds of construction signs "in the street." He had his room completely decorated in traffic cones, road signs and other junk.)

No, the duct tape works fine actually.  The strap is made from a bunch of short strips taped together because it was easier to work with the duct tape in small quanitites, but all in all, the strap is 4 layers thick.  I also don't carry anything heavy in the bag though.  I made to store and carry yarn and current knitting projects.
