i am so excited about these!!
i got a book I LOVE at the library - Sew Many Bags Sew Little Time by Sally Southern - and i HAD to make this backpack. in fact, i made two

M is for my daughter and A is her little cousin (i made the pocket appliques because i thought the front looked a little boring)
it basically took two pairs of jeans and 2- 24 x 27 inch pieces of lining fabric - you're supposed to use a ribbon for the drawstring casing, but i didn't have any i thought was wide enough, so i used a strip of fabric and then used a 1-inch wide ribbon for the string.

i love that the straps are made out of the jeans waistband.
(i didn't figure out until the second backpack that the smooth edge of the band should go toward the outside, but my daughter doesn't seem to mind)

and the action shot!!

here's a better look at the lining fabric

dh thinks the backpack might be too big for my cousin - she's only 4 and my daughter is a tall 6. but she'll grow into it...

i think there's a rule about doing a tutorial for something someone else designed. i got them from a book, so i don't think i'm allowed.
i'll try to look it up or maybe a mod can peek in here and tell me what to do. i'll post whatever i find out...

My initials are also A.M. and I think that these backpacks are terrific. What was the name of that book? who was the author?  Sally Southern? (Never heard that one before, but if she makes backpacks this great, then I gotta get that book.)

this is the page at amazon

http://www.amazon.com/Sew-Many-Bags-Little-Time/dp/071532649X/ref=pd_bbs_1?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1214018054&sr=8-1

but i got it at the library (and will have to take it back soon)

and the amazon listing shows the denim backpack project in one of the other page views!! (underneath the cover photo)

--and it is against the rules to post projects from copyrighted material
but it's a great book, so check it out
