Huh I'm doing a uni project on why people make their own clothes these days and what they do and don't like about the sewing patterns available.  Do you sew cos its cheaper (i'm not sure that it is)?, cos its better quality?, cos the stuff in the shop doesn't fit?, cos its a hobby?

I sew because I generally like pieces of some things that I find commercially and pieces of other things. I never find the exact piece that I like, or one that fits my big ass....ummm I mean my girly curves Grin

Sewing is a fun hobby for me.  It's also been a handy skill to have  (mending and altering ready-made clothing).  I don't make many clothes anymore because as you mentioned, it's not really any less expensive.  But I do like to make my own pants for the same reason that Goddess does.  Grin I also like sewing handbags.

Good luck with you project.

I can't imagine my life without sewing.  My mother taught me to sew doll clothes when I was 4 or 5, and soon after, I was helping her sew my school clothes and new curtains for our house. Now,I sew not only out of the need to create, nor ordinary budget restrictions. I sew because it makes me happy.  I think about my mom and all the beautiful things --pillows, quilts, dresses and suits she's made for herself, me, and other loved ones. I feel connected to ages of sewing women... The rhythm of the needle helps me to meditate on the more complicated areas of life.  Maybe it sounds wacky or overdramatized, but at least it's true for me.... :-)
