Thanks everyone for all the nice comments! To the question of painting right on the surface: I would say that if the surface already has paint on it I would sand it down all the way to the wood -or- sand it down part way and use a primer. If you paint right on a painted surface and then paint over it (even with a varnish on top) it will eventually chip off with time. (This has happened to me before! Not fun...) This table was blank wood on the bottom so I just unscrewed it and painted/drew right on the wood. Not a glamorous table to paint on but the folding ability is essential to apartment living/moving!

About the design: I didn't follow an exact pattern, I looked a several photos of henna designs and sort of melded and adapted them as a I went. They definitely aren't all even but with all the repetition you don't notice.
