Patch pants and messenger bag

So, I FINALLY finished these cordouroy patch pants for my husband.  I had to take them apart and put the pockets on the outside because i just could not get the pockets right.  I still need to redo them .  I kind of made up the pattern:




And here is a messenger bag I just made.  Thanks so much to everyone who has posted instructions for these, they are easy (and I am working on one with a smurf sheet and vinyl, picture to come):

Awww, thanks rox and thixle!  He does like them.  He wore them for three days after I finished them.

I made the bag out of vinyl and a dress I got at goodwill.  I just love using cool fabric from thrift stores.  I am a sucker for the psychedelic prints.

  those pants are so amazing! I've tried and tried to make patch clothing like that and I always give up, defeated by the hundreds of little squares (also why I've never attempted quilting). Do you have any tips? Do you make the patch fabric first and then cut out the pattern pieces or construct the pieces as you go?

Well, this was my first attempt at patchwork, so it took a lot of trial and error.  The cordouroy fabric sometimes shifted while I cut and sewed them.  That made it hard to keep it straight (someday I will get a roller foot).  
I made the patch fabric first, then cut out the pieces for the pants.  

I will probably do this again, but with regular cotton so it will be straighter.  I really want to learn how to put different sizes and shapes together that you see on crazy quilts and clothing.
