We have a serious problem with our dogs wanting to sleep in the bed with us. Locking them out doesn't work because Hunter won't stop scratching till we give up and let him in just to keep the door from being demolished. I have bought several dog beds and put them on the floor in our bedroom but they don't like it because they can't be near us. Okay - I admit, I have totally spoiled them! But when they are in the bed with us they hog the whole bed! Why do dogs have to sleep sideways anyway? My hubby was not happy!

Anyway.... I had a shining light bulb moment and I took our old hope chest which was in really sad condition and pushed it up against the end of our bed.

I took off the torn vinyl and covered it with a really soft blanket and filled it with soft stuffing

And now they can be close to us but not in the bed with us.

And it worked!! Well, for Hunter anyway... Duke loves it too but still winds up burrowing under the covers and sleeping in the crook of our legs... Oh well, one out of two ain't bad Wink Especially since Hunter is the biggest bed hog and without him it feels like our bed is twice as big!

And here is a picture of the boys showing their approval of their new bed.

I know it's not really great - but we sleep much better at night now Smiley
Thanks for looking!

That's a great solution!  Not only do the dogs have a place of their own to sleep, your chest looks a lot better, too.

WOW   Roll Eyes
Trash into treasure, what fun!!
I think it has a few decades more use out of it now!!!!!!
And I love the fabric, I see your boys do too!
My cat sleeps sides ways on the bed too, I thought it was for a quick getaway if needed, but who knows....
Did you staple it from underneath?
It is perfect!!

Thanks for the comments guys - yes beaddizzygrl - it is stapled but not under - on the sides - I couldn't get the board up - it's kind of messy but the dogs don't notice Wink

and unmadehearts - I thought about including an extra cover for them to get under... They both love under the covers too.

Thanks - and the dogs thank you!! I left the original foam there and added a layer of stuffing and it is so comfortable now that I found my daughter lying on it watching TV instead of lying on my bed like she usually does Smiley

LOL! but I also have an 80lb dog diego that crawls right up inbetween me and my husband almost every night, a couple nights ago we had the two kids the dog and cat in bed with us when we woke up we soooo need a King size bed.

Very clever idea. and the dogs are cuties. I share my bed with 2 doxies and 3 cats and it gets tight sometimes. i recently got one dog happy in a little cloth house that was made for the cats, but as cats will do they snubbed it! Roll Eyes

How well I know cats - we just spent 80.00 on a cat tree so she can escape from Duke (the doxie) and she wants nothing to do with it and he is dying to get up in it!!! Knowing him he'll probably find a way too.

Good idea! My husband and I just decided that we need to do something about our 70lb Ridgeback mix, Rita, curling up with us in bed. We woke up yesterday morning when the slats fell out from under us because Rita pushed us all the way to one side...and well I guess that was a lot of weight for all three of us! I will have to suggest this to him. Of course...we don't have any furniture like that, so I'll have to go shopping! Smiley

Maybe a bench or even coffee table would work and be cheaper too. The whole idea was to keep Hunter at our level and near us and it really has worked out better than I thought (knock on wood). He still sneaks in the bed sometimes when we are asleep and not looking but not as often.  Good luck!!

Nothing great?   Tongue  Looks Great to me!  I have two shelties that do the sideways sleep thing, too.... You've certainly got me thinking now!  Fall clean up is winding up in my city, and I'm a closet-dumpster-diver!  I'm going to have to go searching for a "new" chest!   Wink

That is so funny- WE have a doxie named Duke, and he's a major burrower, too!.... wierd coincidence, eh? lol (We rescued him- he's 7 and was crate trained by previous owners, so he's ok with his bed- it's a lot better than the cage he used to sleep in!) --- not allowed in bed with us 'cause he's so little and my SO squashes him with his tossing and turning!

The chest looks sooo nice! Good job!

Thaks guys! Good luck dumpster diving abssinth! And hippie4yahweh, Duke was found wandering around when he was about 10 weeks old and someone got him and brought him to the vet where my daughter adopted him. I can't believe anyone could have let such a beautiful doxie go! But their loss is our gain!!

That's a great idea. Do you have dog stairs that they can climb up to their bed or can they jump that high?

It makes sense that Duke prefers burrowing under the covers, he's the doxie, right?

the bed was kind of low so they had no problem and you are right - Duke is the doxie!

OMG, candeelady, I just completely freaked out over your avatar. IT'S A KITTEN. IN A PRINGLES CAN. OMG. OMG. OMG. SO FRICKIN CUTE. *goes into cuteness coma*

[ahem]

Yeah, my two cats love to sleep with me, too, and they both get under the covers. But they're small cats, I have a double bed, and I don't live with a partner, so actually I love the company :-)
