I don't live in Charlotte, but my aunt and uncle do.  You definitely need to look up Hobby Lobby (I think on University).  It has TONS of supplies for cheaper than Michael's, etc.

There are also some great thrift stores!  Value Village on Freedom Drive definitely comes to mind too.  It's also next to a Goodwill, I think.

Have fun exploring!

haha, this post is SO old,
but I LOVEEEEEEE value village, and the goodwill next to it(it sells by the pound, so you can get ALOT of tshirts and stuff as long as they're light weight)
i live on freedom, so i'm there pretty much every weekend.
oh, and the thrift store next to Gillagin's(the old burger king) has greatttttt finds too.
i go there almost every other day because my mom works at gillagins.
Cheesy!

Speaking of Lincolnton, North Carolina (about 30 minutes NW of Charlotte, between Gastonia and Hickory) there is a nice big fabric shop near downtown's Court Square.

Ledford's Upholstery and Fabrics
202 W Pine St
Lincolnton, NC , 28092-2159
Phone: 704-732-0233

He has a decent selection of durable fabrics throughout several buildings (4 or 5?)
including fringe, tassels, poly foam, batting, etc. He also has an entire room full of leather hides and cuttings. The leather is also decent quality. They will also reupholster that vintage lounge you found at the habitat store.

His leather and fabric are not as high-end as what I offer, but Ledford's is an established and popular destination for crafters, designers, and decorators. I go there often to get ideas on marketing fabric, upholstery, and crafting bags and pillows.

Thanks for telling us about City Art Works in Charlotte. We love the concept of such a gift store! We will definitely pay a visit. . .

A couple others I can think of:

Backdoor Fabrics (used to be Roger's Bros. Fabrics) on Monroe (North of Sardis) - they mostly have home-dec/upholstery fabric...not a huge store, but decent selection

Bead Boutique on 51 at Independence (in the same complex as Marshall's) - tiny but cute

....and of course all of the others pp have mentioned. I'll keep thinking...

Theres this HUGE fabric warehouse with 3(i think?) different fabric shops in it. Um, I think the main building is called Curtains and Co. Here's the address, 2699 Aberdeen Blvd Gastonia, NC 28054
I went there the other day and they have a TON of fabric, it was like heaven. Theres A LOT of remaint bins and they're all for 1.99. I grabbed the prettiest and heaviest one I could find for curtains. THERE WAS 5 YARDS IN THAT SUCKER! 5 yards for 1.99?! I told you, HEAVEN!!

Ok, where the Curtains &Co. is, if you go towards Gastonia instead of Lowell, travel around the Franklin blvd area, and you'll find a Michaels AND Hobby Lobby(and ALOT more, but I think those were the only craft store I went to)! Smiley SCORE!

Michaels address:
2904 E Franklin Blvd
Gastonia NC 28056-9469
(right next to Michaels is Office Max and Dollar store Smiley )

Hobby Lobby address:
1495 E. Franklin Blvd.
Gastonia, NC 28054
(right next to that is a Target and a pet store[really crowded but the birds talk!]!

Theres shopping plazas(and a mall) ALL over Franklin, so your bound to find something.
Franklin blvd, besides Freedom dr., is my favorite street of all time. Smiley
