I was flipping through the latest issue of
Craft Zine
and came across a picture of a beautiful Childhood Heroes themed embroidery by artist/crafter/author Aimee Ray (aka
merwing
here on Craftster). And I thought... hmm...
Childhood Heroes
would be a
great
theme for a Craftster Craft Challenge!
Here's the embroidery piece of Aimee Ray's that inspired this challenge. You can clearly tell Aimee and I grew up in the same era. Crystal Gayle, Shel Silverstein, Jacques Cousteau, Bob Ross... anyone else have fond memories of those four?!
So your challenge this month is to think of one of your childhood heroes and craft up some sort of homage to that person using any craft techniques you want . It doesn't have to be your absolute #1 favorite childhood hero because let's face it -- it could be hard to choose just one! So you can just choose anyone who you remember really admiring when you were a child and creatively express this somehow.
The person could be famous, but doesn't have to be. Your childhood hero could also be fictional character and not even a real person. You could even incorporate a few of your favorite heroes into one project. You can interpret this challenge in a serious way, a funny way, a lighthearted way, however you see fit. Think about somehow incorporating elements that express
why
you admired this person.
Rules:
Post your craft during the period of July 1 - July 5 2008.
No sooner. No later.
On July 1 there will be a special folder created for entries.
Voting will happen from July 6 - July 12 2008.
Each participant can enter
ONE
project. (Although your entry can have multiple components to it.)
Originality:
It's probably impossible to know whether your project is 100% original and has never been posted on Craftster or made by anyone else in the past. But if your project was definitely
inspired
by something you've seen before, then just give credit to that project.
Prizes:
At the end, I'll set up a poll right here and the first place winner will get...
(1) their project in the Featured Projects area
(2) their project in the
Craftster Blog
And this prize (winner can receive prize in U.S. or non-U.S.):
A copy of the beautiful embroidery book by Aimee Ray called
Doodle Stitching: Fresh & Fun Embroidery for Beginners
!
Amazon.com's description:
Asian-inspired lampshades embellished with flying fish. Canvas sneakers decorated with pink and white swirls. A pretty pillow adorned with a sleeping bunny, sweetly curled up. All it takes to create these appealing projects—or add charming embroidered touches in no time at all—are a few simple stitches, some easy techniques, and the nearly 30 projects in this book. Begin by learning several styles for outlining, filling, decorating, and appliqué. Find out about floss, fancy threads, fabrics, and needles. Get the scoop on hoops, and the lowdown on transferring your very own designs onto every type of fabric. The fresh ideas, witty patterns, and clever color illustrations take stitchers from novice to accomplished in a blink of the eye!

Alright, I'm really going to try for this challenge! It's a great one!
Oh, and I LOVE that embroidery.
Has anyone else seen that they have Bob Ross DVDs? I'm tempted to buy them just to watch before bed. He's just so calming.

Love nostalgia, and this should bring out some great memories for everyone.
Would love to have that book, too.

He had happy trees too! I used to love watching his show with my grandfather, who took up painting shortly before his passing! What a fun challenge!

I absolutley have a favorite hero in mind, but that would be hard to reflect in a craft all that he inspires in me

I'm glad you thought of someone! How about a collage of pictures and words that expresses what your hero means to you?
