Peacock dissertation chair

This chair is a gift to myself. Since I am writing a doctoral dissertation, I spend a lot of time in a chair at a computer. So I have improved my chair to meet my needs and stimulate my creativity. I’m also on a grad student income, so I made my whole project with stuff I already had.



The slipcovers are held on with drawstrings. I used a fabric I had bought a long time ago for a project that never got done. I added a big pocket on the back (look closely--it's there) to hold the books I am working with currently. That way I can keep them in one place instead of back in the bookcase or stack on the floor. I can also stash my carpal tunnel wrist braces in there.

Here is the original chair, complete with pee stain from my three-year-old:



To make the chair comfier, I used cushions I had saved from a broken glider chair (I knew they would be useful later). Right now they are being held on by the slip covers, but I plan to secure them to the original cushions with Velcro to reduce slipping.

The peacock is a tribute to Flannery O’Connor. My dissertation is not about O’Connor, but she is my muse.

I love the peacock! Maybe I should makeover a chair so I can finish my MA thesis... but then, that would just be another form of procrastination for me... Good job!

Very nice! You definitely are swaying my vote by saying Flannery O'Connor is your muse. She was my beacon not to long ago as well.
