Wow, I have to try that!

I've wanted to dye self-striping yarn for a while and the idea of dying it in Harry Potter colours is great!

I thought someone might be interested.  So, here's the yarn being worked up by my partner into a headscarf:

Is there  a certain spacing for the colors in making it self-striping?  Or is it just that the colors change abruptly, as opposed to flowing into each other like variegated yarn?

what makes it self striping is that the colors are spaced far enough apart from each other that each color makes a distinct stripe - at least 2 rows wide - when you knit the sock.

A (handdyed) variegated yarn generally has a color repeat which is 2-4 yards long (due to the constraints of dyeing in one's kitchen, I can't answer for commercial yarns) whereas a stripe will need at least 2 yards (but 3 is better) per color, so the color repeat is generally much larger. I usually do between 14 yards and 30 for the color repeat for 4-6 colors.

The color is just personal choice...  Wink

Of course, upon reflection, it would have been better to include a picture of what it knits up as...
