Ok, so I love to make and decorate cakes (whether or not I'm good at it is another story). And the last time I made a cake I used cut-out fondant shapes to decorate it. I think it came out good, but no one ate the fondant, because it was...gross. I thought it would taste like sugar, but it wasn't sweet at all.
    You are supposed to eat it, right? I was wondering if anything could be added to make it taste better? I love the way it looks, so I would like to continue working with it - but not if it doesn't taste good.
   I'd appreciate any comments or suggestions.

Well, technically fondant is edible, but it's more for show than for eating.  I personally NEVER use fondant when decorating my cakes because, like you said, no one eats it.

Fondant is edible but kind of nasty!  You can make it yourself which I heard tastes better but not really great.  If you like I'll see if I can find a recipe for it.  It's a lot less expensive but hard to get the same texture.  Marzipan works really well but some people like and some do not and it is a creamy colour so doesn't work well for some colours.

Thanks for the quick responses guys! I'm just glad that I'm not the only one who thinks it's gross. If I use it again (which I probably will cause it's so pretty), I'll just make people peel it off, lol. Thanks again.

I gave up on fondant...tastes wierd and when I looked into making it, it looked scary like trying to temper chocolate...LOL.  I did stumble across this recipe for this candy clay which tastes yummy, is very pliable, but hardens up more like chocolate...heres an old thread I did about it, sorry my pics arn't working anymore (well not for me lol) but the link is still there.

Yup, fondant's nasty! I cut out polka dots to decorate my baby boy's first b-day cake, looked great! But I have a picture of him trying to eat the fondant polka dot with a very confused face, What is this?!?!

You could use marshmellow fondant. I know there is a recipe for making some somewhere on craftster, and its really easy and really good!

I just had wedding cake with fondant this weekend... I loved it! So did my soon to be mother in law. It's not so sweet, but we really liked eating it... maybe we're just weird.
