From a tiny seed grows a giant tree.

This isn't a pieced quilt, so I feel kind of guilty posting it here...but no where else really seems appropriate. Anyway, I'm so proud of how this turned out and I just have to show off a little...  Roll Eyes

I made it for the Craft for My Kid Swap and my partner has received it, so now I can post it.

The top is a piece of unbleached muslin that I dyed with fair-trade coffee, and then painted with thickened coffee dye to make the islands. I ironed on the felt pieces with fusible webbing and then hand-embroidered the details (a first for me!) I used cotton batting and the back is 100% cotton jersey knit...so all natural materials. It's freehand machine quilted (another first for me). It's about 36" x 44".  I LOVE how it turned out. :-) And I'll definitely make another one some day.

Compass so you don't lose your way:

Dolphins for good luck:

A couple of islands:

Watch out for the giant squid:

Pirate ship:

Jolly Roger flag:

X marks the spot:

And a shot where you can see the back:

Oh, here's a little shot of the coffee dye drying for one of the islands:

I used this tutorial for the dye: http://www.craftster.org/forum/index.php?topic=188530.0

I spent hours and hours and hours on it, but it was totally worth it!
