hi craftster! i've missed you!!

i've been thinking about this for a while now... and i'm really hoping other people are interested as well! i organized the fabric atc swap r2 a few months ago, and i started thinking how cool it would be to do a swap that encourages more than just fabric (as fabulous as fabric is!).

you could make atcs out of polyclay, friendly plastic, wood, metal, astroturf (or not, i'm just obsessed!), fabric, tablecloth vinyl, rubber (bicyle innertubes would be perfect!), acetate, yarn, plexiglass, basically whatever you wanted, as long as it wasn't a paper product!

i think paper could be allowed for a label on the back, or a hidden piece of cardboard to give the atc support, but otherwise, nope!

it would be a great opportunity to play around with various image transfer techniques too! you could do packing tape/contact sheet transfers, silicone transfers, acetone transfers, wax transfers, heat transfers, iron on transfers.... or you could rubber stamps (staZon ink works on almost everything!), or you could paint... you could embroider.... you could emboss metal.... or you could use charms or beads to spell stuff out... so many possibilties!

i was thinking we could do that typical "groups of 4 or 5, send out 3 or 4 cards" atc swap set up, and that would give up more opportunities for experimenting.

timewise, i'd like to fit it in between rounds of the alphabet atc swap, because twiztidblood and i are alternating organizing the rounds. if there's enough interest right away, we could start signups this week, or we could wait until after the signups for the g,h,i alphabet round are finished.

anyone up for it?

Depending on the time frame for sign-ups I would be game to try this. I have done some with just craft foam- it was fun!

I would really like to do this!  I am very new to atc's, love making them, haven't done any trades with them yet, and love the idea of expanding my reach to use materials other than paper!

If sign-ups were in a couple of weeks that would work out really well for me or at least cards weren't due until the end of June or so. I just have a lot going on in the next two weeks. I've never made ATCs out of anything but basically paper so this could be a lot of fun  Smiley

i'm flexible about the number of cards!

what would be good? three? is that too many?

and just like with the fabric atc swap, people could choose to be in two groups if they wanted to make more than three (provided they weren't newbie swappers, of course).

I would be in for 2 cards. If it was for 3, I would probably not be joining. I just don't have the time right now. Sad *le sigh*

I like the idea of two and then being able to be in more than one group...  that way people with less time can join as well as having options for people who want to swap more....

I've never been in this type of swap before so I have a question ... I'm assuming that the only theme to this is that it's not paper, right? Or will we have a theme to work with our partners as well? It doesn't really matter either way, I'm just thinking about the ideas that I have....

I have that same question.  Will we be encouraged to just have free-reign on subject matter as well as materials, or will we be encouraged to do the stalking thing and create cards that have a particular theme or whatever that is of interest to the recipient.  Or could we go either way?

you could totally go either way!

people work differently, and that's fine. i get inspired by other people's passions, and so i'm always happier with the end product when i create something based on my partner's likes, but other people get inspired by the materials, or by images, etc, and can go off on their own! (i'm actually pretty jealous of people who can do that! Wink) for this swap in particular, because we're working with non-traditional materials, it's entirely likely that we'll be more inspired by the materials themselves. the only requirement is that we make something we'd like to receive, and i don't think that'll be a problem! Grin

and i'm glad the 2 cards works, with an option for 4, that'll be perfect!

I just saw this thread.  I'm SO in, too!  I already have a fabric one I can trade, but I've got a stack of acrylic that's calling my name!

How thick is acceptable?  The acrylic is 1/8" thick which I think is okay, but if I glue anything on top (like a button), it'll be thicker.  Is that okay?

Which brings me to my next question (and which may need to be elsewhere, but...):  who knows what kind of glue will permanently bond plastic to plastic (like buttons to acrylic)?

If you go here:
http://www.craftster.org/forum/index.php?topic=236472.10
and scroll down a bit you will find my favorite glue in the whole world, I so far have not found anything that it cannot stick, and it dries crystal clear.  It does stink, but it works great! I'm sure it would work for buttons to acrylic.

Thanks Lmcbride.  I'll see if our Joann's has it, and I'll try some.  I definitely don't want anything breaking off during shipping so I want something industrial strength!

personally, i'd think a bit thick would be okay, but i don't store my atcs in a binder or anything, and i love chunky artwork! i think it's expected that these might thicker, because there are very few materials that are as thin as paper!

if anyone disagrees, speak up!

for glueing plastics, i really love clear goop, and silicone sealant has always worked well for me in the past.

I can guarantee that my non paper ATC's will be on the think side. Since they will be made entirely from polymer clay they will be VERY 3D and bulky. Smiley

whoa....polyclay atc's...this is a whole new world for me, I can't wait to see what everyone comes up with.  I have a few ideas that I'm incubating and hopefully can do some testing with them before committing myself to creating something swap-worthy...

I do store most of my ATCs in a binder with the 9 pocket pages. Except for the swaps I do and then I put them in a book. However, being that these are non-paper I expected that in most cases they would be thicker, so that's no problem for me. In fact, I was wondering about whether the thickness was going to be a problem too.  Smiley

Oh, this is FUN!  I've been playing with my stash of acrylic, and I can't get the laser settings just right.  I managed to catch some pretty pink on FIRE!  Now it's all charred and ugly!  I am DETERMINED I'll be making an acrylic ATC, though!  Can't wait for the sign ups!
