Not quite 1000 cranes yet, but...
«

My SO *loves* origami cranes, and decided he wanted to start towards
1000 cranes
(you're granted a wish/happiness/prosperity/nice shiny things if you get 1000 done, it's also meant to help teach patience and meditation), and we have a really annoying lightshade in our bedroom that has no covering, but seems to be welded to the light fitting!!
So, (excuse the pun) to kill 2 birds with 1 stone, between us both we made a mobile; he folded and I strung them up
ignore the mass of books, that'd be the SO's side of the room....
slightly closer up
from underneath
It'll be an on-going thing (obviously I'll need to get more creative as we get more and more, 1000 won't fit on there...), but we also want to ask friends and visitors to make at least 1 crane each, the more people involved the more luck is meant to be received. We happen to have visitors this weekend, so we already have one from someone else
and finally, this is my favourite one, and my favourite pic!

I know how frustrating folding 1000 cranes can be, since i've done it twice. And am currently working on my third thousand or so...i'm making another curtain, only this time it'll be turtles (representing longevity, cranes, and stars).
I'm a sucker for punishment. Currently, I have made a crane curtain (it's under my old s/n of straight_edger), and given over a 1000 to one of my managers at work to be used as favors at her daughter's baby shower. And there are a couple hundred more in jars upstairs. If you fold a mix of small/medium/large cranes, you should be able to fit at least 200 or so onto the light fixture.
Just a thought. Also, if you space out the cranes with beads, it'll be even more striking. Faceted beads work really well, because they look pretty when the light shines through them. Good luck to your SO, from one folder to another!

maybe make smaller ones to string up with those, more birdies taking up less space.

they're really quite straight forward once you get into the hang of it, I'm still quite cack-handed at them, but the SO can do them even when quite drunk! hehe

This would either help me to have more patience or drive me out of my mind. I just figured though if I got started now I would have to do about 5 1/2 a day to finish 1000 by the end of the year, eh not too bad...

That's not a bad number actually, I've had to temp stop him from making any more until we figure out how to string them better! (I think we'll probably try making them from smaller pieces of paper and putting them between the larger ones)
If it helps, he can now do them whilst watching football, waiting for web pages to load and when at the pub with his mates! And, even my youngest (13) brother has made one for the display
(oh, and he's generally not a patient person, and he's not exploded due to crane-making, yet...
)
