May I suggest that you get a cork board or something similar, dollar store. And an awl or ice pick or large needle. place the strips down and then  poke the strip, then put it on the brad.

I've made probably about 200 of these now, using my magazines and giving them to different friends and family members to use. I've made some variations on them, using old negatives (35mm and 110) and some printed scrapbook paper. Also using the covers of magazines look a little different because the paper is thicker. I do different widths and lengths. Anyways, for the holes, I have a 1/8" hole punch and it works wonders. The normal sized hole kinda ate the head of the brad, so I got the smaller one and it's perfect.

i have used skewers to make my holes, i just leave the paper on them after i poke them and when im done, push the brad through the top Smiley
