So i decided to make a gift for my friends 23rd birthday, we are both big fans of the artist Aubrey Beardsley so i made that my starting point.

My favorite image is this: Salome is about to kiss the severed head of Iokanaan

So i printed the image out a few times, and cut out the different sections, i just used bluetack to float them at different heights and then put them into one of those deep window boxed frames that i got for $4 from the dollar store.

it was really hard to get a pic showing that it is 3D its something you have to see in person!

Then i made her a card with the story of the image, i hand illustrated and wrote out all the text, using the image as a reference

inside the card

The text reads:

Salome, stepdaughter to the king Herod, has fallen in love with the prophet Iokanaan (John the Baptist) He cruelly rejects her, but she swears that one day she she shall have her kiss! By performing the "dance of seven veils" for King Herod, she tempts him into granting her one request. Salome asks to be brought the severed head of Iokanaan. When her wish is forfilled she grabs the head and kisses it passionately, and cries "I have kissed your mouth Iokanaan"

To go with the frame i also made a mirror, i got the mirror for $2 from the same dollar store and ripped off the tacky glitter cover that was on it, i recently got a resin kit from someone and wanted to test it out. I sealed the image with decopage paste before i began and then set it onto the mirror with the resin.

the original ugly mirror

inside

new mirror!!

I also made her a little giftbox to put all the small items in - its made from a $1 cardboard craft box with lots of lace etc..

My other friend Lisa then made her some uber cute little brooch badges and some bookplates. Unfortunately we don't have any images of the bookplates, and they were her favorite!!

the brooches

I will let her post more pics of them if she likes! don't want to steal the glory and all that! hehehehe (sorry Lisa hope you don't mind)

And no birthday would be complete without cake! so we made some cupcakes! i had a little bird left over from the gift box so i put it on top!

let me know what you think, any comments would be appreciated!!

Wow!  I'm also a fan of Beardsley, and I am hugely jealous of your friend.
How did you make the layered image?  It's awesome...

That is my favorite Beardsley illustration...ever. That shadow box is gorgeous and I'm now desperate to have that in my office.

Seriously. Beautiful. Thank you for sharing it with us.

It is so beautiful.  Great subject choice.  And the method seems so simple, but I'd never have thought of it!  Very creative and classy!

Thanks ladies! the frame was actually the easiest thing to make, if a little time consuming. All i did was print out the image to the size of the frame about 3-4 times. I kept one print intact and used that as the base. I then cut out a different part of the image in the remaining three prints. In one i cut out the figures, in another the ground, in another the background. I then used bluetack to hold the cut out pieces in place over the origional image. Each layer had less as it went up so that you could see it was 3D. Hope this helps explain what i did. I dont know how long the bluetack will last, forever i hope, another option would be to buy those double-sided sticky foam mounts. i just didnt have any at the time and couldnt be bothered going to get some!! Roll Eyes
oh and make sure you print the images onto nice thick paper or card so they dont go all floppy on you!

Omg!  Everything is absoulutely gorgeous.  I would love to see how you made your bookplates.  I have done a few of those, but was not impressed with how they turned out, thats why I am a copycat artist.  Ha.  You guys are such thoughtful friends.  That kind of thoughtfulness is what I would cherish forever.  Thanks for sharing. I'm a pretty big Beardsley fan myself, ever since I was a little child and hardly knew what an oversized penis was.   Cheesy  This is also one of my favourite images of his, and you did an amazing job making something amazing!  When I get some spare time, I'm going to have to sit down and figure out what exactly you have done here.

And the mirror is so beautiful!  Great work, you're a caringfriend!

I can see a whole collection of shadowboxes done with ancient Greek vase paintings. This actually gives me an idea for a b-day present for him, 'cause he's studied mythology for years.

Everything's beautiful! Can you describe how you made the mirror? I mean, the resin looks really domed, so did you use a domed mold somehow, or... Tkxes!

Everything's beautiful! Can you describe how you made the mirror? I mean, the resin looks really domed, so did you use a domed mold somehow, or... Tkxes!

The mirror was pretty easy to do, When i brought it it had this vinyl type fabric glued to the top, i just ripped that off, it was only a $2 mirror so that came off pretty easy. Next i just chose an image from the internet, drew an oval around the section i wanted to use so i would have a guide to cut along. Then i printed it out on slightly thick paper (leftover from the frame stuff) then i sealed it using decopage glue/paste ***Its really important to seal the edges too*** you have to go very lightly over the image or the ink will run, i had to have a few goes at that. You could probally pre-seal it with some fixative spray or simular.

Next step i just attatched the image to the mirror, there was still some tacky glue left on it from the old cover so i just used that - otherwise just a little hot glue would even work.

Then i mixed up the resin - i got it from spotlight, its a two part one (It came in a pack for making coasters?? All i did was carefully pour the resin ontop of the image (the mirror had a bit of a lip on it and as the paper was thinner than the origional fabric this lip was now bigger) I just poured the resin until it formed a dome (because it is thicker than water it worked quite well) then i left it to set overnight! The first time i poured i put too much resin and it ran down the side so i had to tip it all off and start again, but the second time it was fine and it took overnite to dry.

Hope this clears things up, it was a relativly easy process just a case of having a go, and because the mirror was so cheap i didnt mind if it didnt turn out!

And thankyou to everyone who has commented! I was really pleased with how the shadow box turned out, my friend requested a few more frames so she could have a go at making a set!
