the only thing i really really hope is that we won't see a huge onset of ads like geek.com has the floating popups and advertisement page when you first click in, the difficulty in locating the forums over the other things.  And the massive amount of ads in the sidebars (the video ones esp. I find those to be the most annoying ads and I never revisit sites that use them) Craftster would probably maybe be an exception to that because I am addicted to this place like a kid with candy lol.  But I know my visits would be less frequent and shorter if there is a ton of annoying ads floating all over the place.

But I know all acquisitions are always money based and they do see craftster as a place to make money or they wouldn't have been willing to take it on.  So that is the only real concern I have (and I"m sure others do as well)

I totally see what you are saying and I can tell you that decisions about ad placements and what kinds of ads are shown and whether they are pop-ups, interstitials, etc etc are all made on very much of a case-by-case basis depending on what makes sense for that community. I can't see that ever making sense on Craftster.

As important as it is to make sure Craftster is making money, it's just as important to keep the community happy or there would be no website to make money from.

Ummm... I got a question too - about data collection and the like.

Dunno exactly how to phrase it, but I'm thinking like Facebook - where there's a lot of fun and 'free' stuff that you can do with it, but in return you're handing over information about to the things you like, the things you do, where you went, which email service you use, all that sort of stuff. As I understand it, this sort of specialised information is highly valuable to companies.....

So - how much are our movements on the site likely to be tracked?

The non-cynically suspicious side of me on the other hand would like to say CONGRATULATIONS!! You must be feeling about three different types of awesome now.

I hope that Craftster (upper-case here) continues to be a craft site, not a general website. I've always liked the fact that Craftster posts are kept on-topic.  And civil.

I agree completely!

And Congratulations Leah!

I don't think I'd want to know what goes on in some of your PM inboxes. Cheesy

heh.

we don't want to know about what goes in your PM inbox either.  another craftster and i were discussing your and Leah's inbox today, and how we were glad we didn't have to filter through the hundreds of PMs we imagine you get each day.   thanks for all you and all the mods do.  we know it's a lot of work.

i hadn't actually read about the sale and found out at the PDX Crafty Vixen get together today.  i'm from the cynical "don't sell out" variety of cranky folks, and my initial reaction was "WTF!?!  What's gonna happen to my beloved craftster!"  but I love davesgarden.com, and if namemedia keeps that site working, i trust 'em to do the same here.

so, i've been won over and my fears quelled. congrats!

So glad you're a fan of Dave's Garden. I talked to Dave at length before making my decision and he couldn't possibly sing NameMedia's praises more. So that was really great to hear.

Congrats on a win win situation Leah. You obviously put a lot of thought into this and wouldn't have "sold out." This a wonderful supportive online community, and I'm so glad I wasn't here for the strange Asian Man pms!
