Was you using the tube gel stuff?

I recommend in the future using the 'icing color' stuff.  It's in a little container and you can get out what you need with a toothpick, etc.  I had to have black icing once and that was all I could find that didn't give me gray icing.  You can find it in your wilton supply stores (or wal-mart craft dept)

I have the little Wilton container. That's what I used. I have no idea why it didn't work this time. Sad

Red is really difficult, but there is a powdered a form of icing coloring that works great.  It's the only way I've been able to get red and not pink.  I ordered it from a food supply place for my job at the time, so I'm not sure where would be a good place to get it, but I'm sure it couldn't be that difficult to find online.

I feel your pain! I was trying to make "piratey" cupcakes for Talk Like a Pirate Day - they were going to have black icing and those gold chocolate coins on top.

Unfortunately, I had less than piratey grey cupcakes, which looked feral. They also make your teeth all grey when you eat them. At least we had piratey-looking teeth!

My mother decorates cakes semi-professionally.  She always makes red frosting by replacing the water/liquid with juice from maraschino cherries, then she adds additional red food colouring.
