This morning I found this article, and thought it might be of interest to the knitting/crochet community...

http://www.news.com.au/technology/story/0,25642,23690642-5014239,00.html

What the Dickens? All over this community are fan-made homages to their favourite TV show characters - do a search on 'Harry Potter' if you need further proof!

Is the BBC worried that a free pattern under a Creative Commons licence is going to be misconstrued as official sanctioned Dr Who merchandise? I'd like to think that people are somewhat able to differentiate between knit-blogger Mazzmatazz's recreation and "real" copyrighted information...
http://www.mazzmatazz.co.uk/index.php?page=knitting

Perhaps we should all petition the BBC (the link's in Mazzmatazz's website), just on principle, so they can see they're shooting themselves in the foot.

Rant over!

I saw this as well. My roomies are huge dr who fans and their obsession is quickly becoming mine as well. This is very disturbing news for any person who does fan art and posts their creations! Angry

Craftsters unite! I sent the article of to many of my friends, we all wish to petition this!

and to quote bill and ted, "BOGUS!"

I was just getting ready to post about this!  I fail to see how this is a threat to their franchise

It does seems that they are not directly taking action with Mazzmatazz, but its was the people that were using her free patterns and making money from them (bad craft karma!!!)

Evil crafters were selling unlicenced Dr Who merchandise on eBay and they traced the patterns back to her site.

She may come out of this very well in the end, if she gets a merchanising contract with the BBC for the patterns, which apparently they are discussing.

If other people were using her patterns in order to make money, then they are DEFINITELY breaching copyright. Mazzmatazz posted her instructions under a Creative Commons licence, which doesn't allow for unauthorised use for profit.

Intellectual property is a really tricky area (I'm a graphic designer by trade and we have to be really careful with clients so they don't rip us off further down the line), but hopefully Mazzmatazz will come out of this well - especially if she ends up collaborating with the BBC!
