i finished! !!!
i made the top by using my old betsey johnson dress as a pattern. (traced the panels- didn't cut it apart or anything! that would be awful). the skirt is a bubble hem and i sort of just went at it.

there's a zipper in back and i love it lots. i am going to be way hellsa proud at prom when people ask if i made it. god i love my serger!!!!

p.s. sorry for the poor cropping that makes it larger than neccesary!

give me your eyes, i need sunshine.
your blood, your bones, your voice, and your ghost.

we've both been very brave.
walk around with both legs,
fight the scary day.
we both pull the tricks out of our sleeves.

but I'll believe in anything
and you'll believe in anything.

I live in Finland and we don't have proms here but we do have a dance in upper secondary school. You're kind of supposed to wear somewhat historical or old-fashioned clothes. You rehearse loads of old dances and then you "perform" them to the rest of the school and later to guests... I had this dance about 14 months ago.

So, as I've always liked the history of clothing in general and thought I'd like to try wearing something like that, I decided to make an 1850s ball gown. I did have a pattern but it was basically pretty different from what I wanted it to be, so it had to be altered. And as I wanted it to look like the ball gown I had seen in a book (an actual 1850s drawing), the material had to be velvet and as it is expensive, I bought the kind you're supposed to use in interior decorating  Grin My mum and I made it together and it was finished just in time... I'm not completely pleased with how it turned out but it was okay (there were worse Wink)

So this is me dancing (a lousy photo, I know):

Yes, I danced with a girl but so did a lot of people... There weren't enough guys and the whole thing is about dancing.

I'm graduating this year, at the beginning of June, and I decided to make my dress myself (and my hair and make-up, even though I'm a little anxious about the hair as I have to fit a hat in my head on top of everything). I've already bought a pattern and the fabric and this time I'm going to finish earlier as I have a lot of things to do...

Here's a photo of the materials I've managed to gather up so far:

And this is what the hat will look like:

Here's a link to the pattern:

I'm pretty sure I'm going to make the bolero too as it can get chilly... I suppose making a practise dress from cotton wouldn't be a bad idea  Wink

From the book Godless:

Just Al: I know that God is real. I feel his presence in my heart
Me: What does it feel like?
Just Al: It's hard to describe Jason. It feels good.
Me: Oh. I thought maybe it was like heartburn or something.

alright, so i have about 3 weeks to make a dress. i want it to look like this one:

i can't for the life of me find a good pattern. i've found one or two similiar, but none of the bodices have the ruching at the bust that i like. it's such a simple dress, but i'm horrible without patterns. i have this awesome purple polka dotted fabric, too.

my poor date, his mom wanted his vest to match my dress so he asked for a bit of the fabric. so now i HAVE to make the dress, or his vest won't match at all.

I have a craftster link about a dress like that and i book marked it!! it looks like the dress you want, the ruching in the front, but it doesn't have a whirly skirt.  I actually made a dress like that yellow and white polka dots and it looks super cute, and it was easy to make.

Here's my prom dress, made from about 25 ties. I got the idea from a couple posts around here, but especially this: http://www.melissasuestanley.net/pages/sewing.htm

It's not perfect-- when I sit down, it bunches up around the stomach but that's pretty much unnoticable. I like it a lot and I can't wait to get out and show it off!
