I'm staying away from pastels and going for a deep chocolate brown. It has a basque waist with a boned bodice and a gently flaring skirt.
ooh sounds wonderful. Pictures?

i'm gonna try to make my dress this year...gotta start SOON, cuz i'm not ALL too amazing @ sewing...
i need help tho! i need patterns, and any tips, and...yeah....
i found a pattern that i had LOVED, but sadly, it was only in plus size
if you wanna know, it was simplicity 5207, the one w/ the mesh overlay that buttons off-center, i was gonna do it in a dark red, or purple, or teal-y blue. and the overlay would have been black...any patterns like that would be nice...or any other ideas...help me out please!

um...only one comment about this...deep chocolate brown is beautiful, but...if it's for prom...what's the date gonna wear? i was gonna go w/ brown until i remembered that my date will probly be wearing a BLACK tux...not pretty... in my opinion @ least...
ahhh! i found a dress that i'm totally in LOVE w/...but idk if i could manage to make it

no, it's definately not a corset, just a top that laces up and might have some light boning in it to help keep it from sagging

This is a great thread! I want to have a prom party! I am out of high school and didn't go to prom though I went to homecoming, but I want to put together a prom party around the same time prom's will be going on. My thing is that I only want to use cotton fabric and I haven't seen any dresses that are made out of fabric. Can I have a glamorous gown made out of cotton?

People on here are so talented ^^ my prom's not for two years, and I was definitely planning on making a dress, but then I found the most Amazing dress at Lord and Taylor's the other day. Yes, I know, you're probably like, you got a dress TWO years in advance? But it was such an amazing deal...brand new Jessica McClintock originally $430, for only $9.99! I'm totally not kidding.
A picture (also posted in the 'What are you wearing today?' thread I started a while ago)...
Don't worry, I'm not actually that tall. I'm standing on a chair! The dress is just so long, lol.
But, to my credit (hopefully), I am going to DIY other parts of my outfit when the big day looms nearer (I sound like some cheesy ad), aka a wrap, a purse, my jewelry, etc.
Also, I made a ball gown recently from an old flag silk (think color guard) for a waltzing ball we had at our school. So I'll have pictures of that up soon!
<3
-Tessa
** and roskate, that dress IS gorgeous! I'd try and make it if I had a sewing machine, haha. Even then...it looks pretty impossible for my skill level xD but I'm sure you can do it!

Wow... Some long-ass thread.
Anyway. I'm here for the same reason everybody else is--I am interested in making a dress for my (8th grade)(!) prom. I'm pretty inexperienced... Does anybody know some patterns that are easy and fabulous (and def. worth paying $14? I know, what I cheapskate I am.
)?
Anyways,
http://www.daddyos.com
has some really groovy dresses... I might want to get a pattern like that. One of these, specifically:
http://www.daddyos.com/retro/img/ss3.jpg
http://www.daddyos.com/retro/img/3299.jpg
http://www.daddyos.com/retro/img/ss1.jpg
I also like this dress, not from daddyos.com. I first tried it on at Trash and Vaudeville in Manhattan (NYC). It looked fabbity on me... but was a size too small, and they didn't have the next size up. I looked FOREVER on the internet for this dress, so you guys had better NOT take this away from me (in case I don't make my own dress)!
Sorry bout all the pix. Anyway, if you know any good patterns I could use for these I would be eternally grateful. Also incase you want to suggest something else, I am 5'2", about 120 lb., 31" bust, 28" waist, 33.5" hips, and my best attributes I would think, are my back and shoulders. I do some yoga; I want to either crank it up or start a weights program to improve my legs, arms, and tummy(plus, better-looking pecs=bigger-looking boobs) so the measurements might end up changing.
Whew! Long post.
I was wondering if anyone knew how to do the bra part on the top. I love it and if i make my dress i want the top to look like that!!!! any help would be appreaciated plzzzz!!!

I need some help! I was browsing ebay for some dress ideas, and I found the most GORGEOUS dress EVER:
HERE!
http://www.costumeheaven.com/aw2_1105/aw2k/LotImg8685.jpg
however, i'm not lucky enough to have such a small waist, SO, i was wondering if any of you could help me come up with a similar pattern/ideas of how to go about making one just like it?
i would want it to be just as ruffled at the bottom, not just a straight, flat dress, if you know what i mean?
doing the gold/whatever color my date and i may decide on top would be pretty easy.. i'm just not sure which pattern to use to start out with.. any suggestions? i'd love you guys for helping, hehe :]
