Ok, so.  I'm going to try making my own dress.  Top top is the Tea Top Pattern from Burdastyle's website, nd I'll probably add a halter strap, just in case C;

But its the skirt I'm nervous about...  I want it to look like this, I think.
http://www.promdress4u.com/shop/item_images/la_femme_short_prom_dress_13123.jpg
I'm gonna have it be a half circle skirt, but when it comes to sewing the fabric to the top, should I have it gathered, or actually cut the fabric into a circle?  Am i even making any sense?
And do i need to make a petticoat?
TIA, Minorpunk56~!

I'm not an expert or anything, but you will need a petticoat if you make the outer layers of any fabric but tulle. Other wise, you could just make a lot of layers of tulle and put the fabric for the bodice as a skirt lining so the bottom isn't see-through.

I don't know what shape to cut the fabric, but I had a pattern that required a petticoat and the shape to cut was a large rectange that you pieced together and gathered around the top then attached to a waistband.

Also, this board is pretty dead, so you might have better luck asking questions on the general clothing disscusion board.          Good Luck!!

So is it dresses only or anything to do with prom? If it's only dresses then I'll be sad because I already have one. (It was a steal 2 dollars just because of a tiny hole that I can fix on my own)
But accessories and stuff I want to do on my own.

I've never made a dress, apart from Ren-faire-esque-costumey things, but it makes perfect sense to try a formal dress, yes?
Here's the plan...

Sorry its kind of icky...my scanner does odd things to color. ANYWAY.
I was thinking a black satin with a pickup skirt (not as wide and flared as in the picture, that was the original plan...have since changed my mind Wink and rainbow layers of tulle!
YES.

We shall see...

Hey everyone! I've decided to make my own dress for prom since i have neither the money, nor the patience to shop for one. Yet... I'm patient enough to make one. Haha  Grin

Anywho, my pattern is Simplicity 3878 and I've already got the bodice mostly done except for the ruffle on top. The lace I'm using has a gorgeous scalloped edge and I'm using that as the ruffle.

I'd like to show off my shoes and pedicure so I'm altering the length to be between the floor-length and tea length options.

Will continue to post as I progress! Wish me luck as my prom is on April 24! Smiley
