I ran across this recipe a few weeks ago and HAD to try it. Last night was the night and, let me tell you, this is SUPER easy and so so so so good.

The recipe is very simple with ingredients that are usually on hand:

2-3 cups bread flour
1 tsp yeast
1 tbsp brown sugar
1 cup warm milk (110 degrees, or about a minute in the micro)
1 tsp. salt

Mix all of these together until they form a ball. Start with 2 cups of flour and then add it a tablespoon at a time until it becomes workable with your hands.

Knead the dough for 5 to 10 minutes. Let it relax for 5 more minutes

Meanwhile, get a pot of water and 4 tbsp. baking soda to a simmer.

Cut your dough into 6 pieces. Roll them into "snakes" and make the pretzel shape. Carefully, with a spatula, dunk the pretzels into the simmering water for 5 seconds. They should begin to float.

Take them out and place them on a greased cookie sheet. Sprinkle with Kosher salt and bake for 12 to 14 minutes at 425 degrees.

ENJOY!

I ate mine with cream cheese....so delicious.

i've never really made bread, like for real.  I have done it in the bread machine, but i think that hardly counts for making bread.

I made these today and they were fantastic.  The only thing I would mention is that it would probably have been a little easier to shape them if I had let the dough rest some more after rolling it out into snakey shapes.  But they are delicious!

My daughter and her boyfriend make these frequently . . . yummy!  Because we all dip the pretzels, they just make them into pretzel "sticks" about five inches long rather than trying to shape them.  It works really well!  Enjoy!

We make home made pretzels every fall and our kids love them! I'll bookmark this recipe to give it a try. We still haven't found "the" recipe yet so we're willing to give a new one a try.

I made these yesterday and they were pretty darn incredible.  I like my pretzels a bit on the sweet side so next time i might add another tablespoon of brown sugar.

pretzels are awesome! we make them every year for our oktoberfest party using the "mall pretzels" recipe on allrecipes.com. except now we've graduated up to using a lye bath instead of baking soda before cooking them. you can order food-grade lye online. if you get it, the ratio is 40 grams of lye to 1 liter of water, stir until dissolved. the pretzels sit in the bath for about 15-30 seconds, and then you place them on a tray and bake them. try not to get the lye on your hands, it is a bit caustic, but it won't kill you. we think it makes them taste more like pretzels and as a bonus, they also seem to get browner and shinier than with baking soda. try it!

I made 3 batches of these today!
It's a wonderful recipe for basic pretzels that you can really spice up. The second batch I made was Wheat apple-cinnamon:
substituted reg. flour for wheat flour, substituted milk for 1/2 cup of warm applesauce and 1/2 cup of warm water, added 4 tablespoons of brown sugar, added a tablespoon or so of cinnamon.

followed rest of directions as usual. I know I used more flour on this batch than the regular one..These were really lovely! Also, instead of salt on the top I sprinkled them with regular sugar before they went into the oven...

The third batch was garlic-cheese:
used half wheat flour and half bread flour, substituted brown sugar for a pinch of regular sugar, added a teaspoon of garlic salt, added about 2 tablespoons of minced garlic (We like our stuff REALLY garlicky, it'll be just as good if you add less) and a few handfuls of shredded cheddar cheese.
topped with more shredded cheese and some kosher salt before baking..

How did you get your pretzels so pretty? My pretzel shaping skills need some SERIOUS work.

I'm a pretzel addict and I can't wait to try this recipe!

Can someone explain what Kosher Salt is please? (I get that it's Kosher and it's salt, but we don't have it here in England! How different is it from table or sea salt?)

Kosher salt is a coarse grain salt not fine at all like table salt, some sea salts are a coarse or large grain and may be substituted for the kosher salt

How difficult would it be to make these cheese filled? My boyfriend loves those super processed, totally unhealthy cheddar cheese stuffed pretzels in the frozen section, and I'd love to make him a healthier version. I guess I could just cut through my pretzel snakes and fill with cheese and close up, then bake as directed, right? That's close to how I've done stuffed crust pizza before (flatten the edge of the dough out, make a ring of cheese, then fold a little over to cover it up), so I'd imagine it would be similar...

Today I woke up with the itch to bake. I have such limited ingredients at the moment, however, and so I decided to try something new. Most of my recipes need lots of stuff...

After a few minutes of searching, I ended up stumbling upon this recipe!
I was a little nervous, since I've never made pretzels before and they give the impression of complexity. However, they turned out amazing!
Even my son, who's just shy of two (and rather picky) enjoyed them!
The only thing I did differently, was the salt - I didn't add any salt to the tops.
Also, I am apparently terrible at the classic pretzel shape. I made a couple attempts, then shaped the rest randomly. I made a couple of them into heart shapes, since Love Day is almost upon us.

Thank you for posting this!
