So this project is a lot of firsts for me....
-first piece of clothing I've ever made myself, (excluding some pyjama pants in like grade four, but my mom did like 90% of those.)
-first attempt at any sort of colour changing in knitting, ever
-first thing that I used my (mostly) brand new sewing machine on
and I AM SO PROUD OF THIS SWEATER IT'S RIDICULOUS. Like, whoa.
It's not even that flattering, but I have worn it every day since I finished it.
I must have re-started the intarsia, like 6 times before I got the hang of it.
I like this picture, the loose ends look like lazers.
At first I was knitting with all the balls of yarn attached, but everything was getting REALLY TANGLED, so I devised an ingenious plan involving clothespins!
One finished, one to go....
And here is where I finished it... the first time. Unfortunately, though you can't see in this picture, it was shaped like an enourmous bell.
Anyways, It was likely the most unflattering sweater in the world. Though I LOVED the robots, I hated the fit. I thought about frogging the body and trying again, but that just seemed like so much work.
So I just threw it to the back corner of my closet, and cried a bit. You know.
Anyways, fast forward to me finding the exact sewing machine
that I'd been drooling over, on craigslist for half the price....
So I decided that maybe I could salvage the sweater, and turn it into something like a Cowichan sweater? Outerwear, with a zipper.
I was a bit scared to cut the sweater to sew the zipper in, so I was extra careful... I basted it, then handstiched the zippers on, then sewed them over twice with the sewing machine, THEN cut the sweater. I cut a HUGE upside down V of fabric out of the middle.
anywhoo, now with Zipper!
After blocking and drying, I wore it out. And discovered that when I wear a messenger bag and a boat-necked shirt or tank top underneath (which is often), the coarse wool pressed into my shoulder and was extremely irritating. Sooooo, I sewed a lining into it. I had to handstitch it in, so don't look to close, I'm not known for neatness.
The front is half-lined, like this (I didn't want it to be TOO hot) a
and the back is fully lined,
and the sleeves are unlined.
ACTION SHOTS! excuse how many there are, and the lovely faces I am making in them.... did I mention how much I love this sweater?
I think i might add pockets next........
It's actually less thourough than this post, but you can visit my blog
if you want!
