There is no spoon - Recycled lamp
«
on:
May 05, 2008 10:02:55 AM »
Here is my entry. I made a lamp out of ice cream sundae spoons and a $2.00 IKEA light fixture.
What you need:
A love for ice cream so you can collect plastic spoons, or cocktails optional (works with cocktail sticks, too
)
A cheap bathroom light fixture
A heat gun
A glue gun
What you do with it:
You start by playing around and finding out what kind of spoon does what when you heat it up.
When you are happy with your results, you can start layering the curled spoons onto the glass bowl of the light fixture.
The hot plastic will stick to the other spoons and they will form a single layer.
Be sure to do this in a well ventilated area!
When finished with the spoons, use the glue gun to glue the plastic bowl to the glass of the light fixture for stability.
What you get:
A lovely light fixture that surprisingly stands up well to the heat. We put an energy saving lamp into it, so it doesn't get too hot. And all this for $2.00!!!
A special thanks to everybody who helped me collect the spoons, often under great sacrifice to their personal appearance
and to my husband, who ran to the ice cream store to get more spoons when I was running short with the deadline approaching rapidly. He also mounted the light fixture. Mua.

That is so funny! While I made the lamp I suddenly remembered seeing the ceiling in the Bellagio and just loving it. I guess it was my secret inspiration for the project
Had to google Dale Chihuly to make the connection though.
The spoons and the hotglue don't melt, it's got an energy conserving bulb in it that doesn't get too hot, so it holds up just fine.
Thanks for the nice comments, they're really appreciated!

SOOOO SUPER FANTASTIC!!! Love love love this idea....
I SO very much want to do this for my daughter's room. She's three and would probably love me for all eternity if I did it in pink and purple.
Yep, it's that great!
