Pretty much what it sounds like! When I heard this challenge idea, I originally wanted to make a knit chandelier, but it would have been too complicated, with the wiring and all. So I settled on a knit lamp!

It started as a standard white cheapy Target lamp:

and I knit a long tube to cover the stem, covers for the top, base, and a cover that goes all around the lampshade, then I seamed the pieces together onto the lamp. It's knit from Paton's Classic Wool merino, on size 3 DPNs. My husband calls it the silliest cozy ever. I think it's cool.

Detail shots:

turned on:

in its actual habitat, in my living room:

disclaimer: yes, it is fairly unsafe. Yes, it will be used only for short amounts of time under close supervision. Also, wool is natually fire resistant. But still.

I love my knit lamp! Smiley

Hey, who needs a lamp anyway!?  Wink

It makes for a great conversation starter and decorative item!  Your knitting at the base of the lamp is beautiful!  I love how it spirals!

How fun and whimsical--and probably the kookiest cozy ever!

if you used a curly flourescent bulb would that work better, safety wise?
i think they don't get hot but i can't remember.  we are waiting until all our bulbs wear out to replace them with those.

ps - rocks anyway

That is SO awesome!  Grin Grin I love it. And the new bulbs they see don't get hot at all - they're white (or blue-ish?) and have a "natural glow." My lamps don't get hot at all.

This is freakin' fantastic!  Looking at the first picture, I couldn't tell that the lamp was covered with a knitted cozy...and then the rest of the pictures pretty much said it all!  You did good!
