We are decorating my young son's room in a space theme, so I decided to take the swag idea to another galaxy.  Years ago we found/retrofitted a Earth globe swag, but it is a little to mature for a preschooler...no bright colors at all.  So when the challenge came, this was my idea...

I made this completely from scratch with a little electric-type assistance from hubby.

We found some half-sphere shades at Lowes, along with plexiglass, wiring, a wheel switch, socket and wire harp.

Finding a paint that allowed enough light through was problematic.  But we finally settled on some faux stained glass paint.  I sponge painted the planet red...

...Cut a ring out of plexi,

re-fitted the shades and wired the shade to the harp...

and added a blue layer made out of quilters template to the rings.  Meanwhile, my hubby who rightfully believes that electric-wiring might not be a good idea for an accident-prone wife.... made sure that the switch was on the cord and the wires went to the right places...

Then I hung it in its own solar system

I love almost fiber-optic way that the plexi ring glows and how the blue adds a depth to the rings.

Son is happy...I am happy...and hubby just says that it is great...Life is good.   And no light saber fights were needed for this happy ending!

I had half a heart attack when I saw the title of your piece - I'm waiting for the paint to dry so I can assemble my entry to this challenge, and all I can say is:

Great minds think alike!

(Don't worry. I think they're different enough that I can still enter and not look like I totally ripped you off)

I really like the way you made your sun - wish we had a Lowe's here!

Thanks everyone for the comments!  It is always wonderful to hear what others think about my projects.  I really enjoyed making it & my son is hoping for an entire galaxy of them in red. Not too sure about the red thing(I'd like more variety), but it is what he likes.

One suggestion for anyone trying to make another of these:  Measure the sizes carefully, a bit of drilling had to be done to make everything fit.  Although, you can just add another ring if you mess up Cheesy

I can't wait to see yours.  Keep air on it, and don't be afraid to move in a fan! JK
