Being as I'm a bookish sort of a person. It doesn't cast a superduper amount of light, but it's bright enough to read by if you sit close Wink

Le making Of:

And the whole nasty process (not that it was nasty really) is outlined here.

Funny you should mention Harry. The original plan included a beaten up copy from work (Library), but.. well the spine sorta fell off. lol

I LOVE this lamp.  I am a huge reader too.  (And how lucky are you that you get to work in a Library?)  I may just have to make one.

Definitely hitting "this rocks!"

Being a lover of books myself I have a very hard time even thinking about doing anything more destructive to them than saving my place by laying one open face down.  However, I do have some out of date law books I saved from the trash in case I was ever inspired to book alteration...and this may be just the inspiration I was waiting for: I love this idea!  Wouldn't this provide a nice ambient glow, or even make a great nightlight?  Now let's see, where DID I put those old legal tomes....

Great idea! I want one!

This looks like a great job for those er... fabulous... reader's digest condensed books. ;.)
I'd cry to use Harry Potter or something else worthwhile, but I never think twice in destroying those condensed books. Such pretty covers.... :.)

Thanks everyone! I have to admit by book #3 I was thinking "Who's idea was this? Idiot! Idiot!" so for those about to try it, I recommend taking lots of breaks and also having someone else bring you coffee and cakes.

My Husband would just die to see me deface a book like that but I think he'd be pleased with the outcome!
I may have to ask around for some outdated encyclopedias, they'd be awesome for this.

Oh so true.

Since i'm a library worker, I kind of lost my reverence for books - part of my job is ripping the pages out of discarded items so they can be sent to the recycling place (the covers have plastic on them and can't go). The first year I worked there, every time I had to do it I'd twitch.

These days... well I still love books. But I'm not so scared to rip them up! If it helps, pick up books that either violently oppose your personal values (then you can say "Take that person who disagrees with me!" *slash slash*) or books by authors you can't stand ("bestseller my arse, take THAT lousy plot devices!")

By the way, where do you get those LED lights??? ?

The ones I used were in the outdoor lighting section at the hardware store. They're solar powered, but you should be able to find mains or battery if you'd prefer. I don't know about in the states, but here they're just lumped in with the bulb type light strings.

Thanks so much for your very quick response, which will at least point me in the right direction....and if I can't find them right off the bat, I'm in good with the reference librarians at the library who can FIND ANYTHING!!!
