so, i'm in love with cheytown's dress for little girls: http://www.craftster.org/forum/index.php?topic=170402.msg1742893#msg1742893.

but, i am sans little girl to make stuff for.  this fact made me sad when i found an XXL women's button down shirt for 4 bucks at old navy day before yesterday in really cute blue-with-red-stripes fabric.  but i bought it anyway and made the next  best thing: a cheytown dress in MY size!

obviously it's a little different than the original dress, but i sometimes have more surface area than a child, so i followed the tutorial but adjusted it to fit.

ta-da!

front

(excuse retarded face)

back

i used some black lace i'd bought for another project (don't be stingy with the lace, i say) for trim, and also for the straps because i really didn't feel like making actual straps.

some closeups:

(the bottom button usually doesn't hang like that (but unfortunately the top does roll down all funky-like))

nipple shot!  sorry guys.  my main sizing issue was that it's crazy tight around m'boobs.

i took the breast pocket and moved it to the left hip area

i didn't have red thread, which would have been ideal, so i just used black.  Sad

and finally, one shot for fun

i had to sew an extra button and  button hole to the top of the back.  my first button hole - by hand!  hand sewing is definitely not something i'm cut out for.  no detail shots of that, for sure.
i'm planning on sewing little red ribbon bows or something to hide where the straps connect to the dress, and i might cinch down the middle front of the bodice so it's not straight across the top.

it's a little tricky to get in and out of, what with the whole "buttons in the back" thing, but overall i'm pleased.  okay i LOVE it, even with its issues.

comment and critique the heck out of it, please.

I love it!  I've been meaning to try something very similar for me, but I was thinking of making it into a shirt for me, long flowy summery kind of thing.  I love how you did the lace and used it as straps too, definately mentally filing that idea away!!!  I made one of these dresses for my daughter and the straps very definately my least favorite part to do...

I love it! This is such a a cute dress. I'd like to make myself one, but I can't ever find dress shirts that are long enough to be a dress. Even my dad's 3X men's shirts would let my butt hang out.  Embarrassed

yeah, even this is a little too short for me to be 100% comfortable with it.  i'll probably wear it with tights or jeans.  and a sweater, lol.

it's even cooler that you can make it.

This is so cute!  I've been wondering how the cheytown dress would look on a grownup!  It looks fantastic.
