I wanted to add a few tips i picked up while working on this project:

If i didn't stress it already in my original post, super sharp shears are a huge asset. I have a pair of gingher shears that are scary sharp and made cutting a breeze.

I should also mention that the process of fusing the backing onto the felt makes it slightly more stiff and rigid, which in turn makes it a bit easier to work with in my option.

Finally I found that on parts that were repeated ironed while they still had the backing on (like the dark brown area that was the backing for the whole piece) lost some of their stickiness when it was time to remove the backing and actually adhere the whole thing down. So i guess my tip would be to avoid excessive ironing of any pieces with the backing still on and if possible work top down with the layers instead of bottom up. (i hope that makes sense...) I was able to salvage it by adding a new layer of fusible web on top of the old one but it's probably not an ideal solution...

Also thanks again to everyone for all the great comments!
