between your post and the reviews on the other site, i'm convinced this is the cake i will be making next week for my boyfriend's birthday. i like the idea of your berries and cream filling, i was planning on doing that  with his cake.

for the frosting, did you use their butter cream? i'm not a fan of butter cream, and will probably use a similar whipping cream based frosting.

one more thing, the reviews we either really good, or really bad. any tips, since yours came out so nice?

The frosting on the outside was the same as in the filling.  Chantilly cream.  I whipped fresh cream and added a little icing sugar for sweetness.  That is all that is on the outside of the cake.

I followed the recipe and mine turned out fine.  I guess you could just practice the cake part if you were worried.

Today's my birthday, so I bought some new bitsy cake pans and a cake decorating kit yesterday with the b'day cash from my MIL. I've vowed that I will make myself try something new at least once a week! I may have finally found my "thing". 

It turned out better than I anticipated, although it's totally not perfect and can't really hold a candle to your cake, mum2five! My strawberries weren't the same size, hence the lopsided dollop on top. And, it is bitsy - only about 4.5 inches tall. It's sitting on a small salad plate.

We enjoyed eating it and I enjoyed making it! Be gentle, remember - this is my first time!

When I first saw the picture of the filling I thought it was Eton Mess (strawberries, crushed meringue and whipped cream). It's given me an idea- Eton mess as cake filling.... yum...

Your cake looks beautiful and I'd be sorely tempted by the filling on its own! Hope your grandad liked it.
