Every time I blink I have a tiny dream....

So I have been dying to make one of these lately. I do a small container herb garden every year, and this year I thought I would use it to invite some of the "little people" in. So without further ado, my little fairy garden- I made it in a large metal wash tub, almost all of the plants are edible herbs except for three, I made the house out of a hallow tube of bark covered in old mushrooms (window box), the fence is woven willow branches, and everything else is thrifted. For scale my fairy is about 4 inches tall. Enjoy!

I was thinking the same thing.  You've got to love when beauty and function are one.  Well done!

Pretty!  I love that it is able to be moved inside in the winter time.  Or is it inside already?  Either way, I'm gonna have to rip you off on this idea.

I just wanted to post and let you know that we did this today at my daughter's 7th birthday party. (Albeit a smaller, simpler version.) The party invitations included a little tiny fairy letter asking for help to build some fairy houses that were lost in winter storms. I bought 7 of the 12qt size galvanized buckets, then my daughter and I picked up a selection of small-potted flowers. We needed about 3 bags of potting soil for everyone. I'd punched holes in the bottom of the buckets beforehand for drainage, and my daughter and I had gone on a quick hike the day before to a local trail to gather bark and moss for the houses.

The girls sorted through the building materials and figured out which pieces would make their house and I would hot-glue them together. (We had to make things fast and simple - walls, roof, door, bead for doorknob). Then they planted their flowers, added their house, and used blue aquarium rocks for a trail or a little pool. They all came out SO CUTE. And the girls really enjoyed it. Later during the party, our backyard fairy dropped off a fairy figurine (just cheapy ones from the drugstore) for each of them with a little note thanking them for helping build her sisters some houses.

It was a huge hit! So thank you, thank you, for sharing your project!  Cheesy

Sugarbeth, that is such an awesome idea! I hope to aspire to such a high level of mom coolness when I have little ones! Unfortunately the fairy garden is a little overgrown (her gardener has been on vacation I think, or just doesn't use enough herbs for cooking!) Thank you everyone for all the nice comments! It is great to have other people enjoy something that brings me joy!
PS the fairy now has a working waterfall and outdoor lights for nightime.

Ok so now it's time for a million questions. I really really really want one of these. I was planning on doing a container garden for my kitchen to grow herbs in, and figured, why not make it amazing like this!?!?!

So first of all, do you have any updated pics, cause I would love to see the waterfall.

Secondly, what sort of plants did you use? Is the maintenance of the garden difficult? Did you layer rocks in the bottom? What types of plants did you use?

Thanks in advance, I know I am really asking a lot! But I would love to steal this idea use the inspiration you've given me.

Okay, I know that this is COMPLETELY off topic, but I've wanted to know for a very long time how people do the line through text as shown above in "steal this idea".  Can anyone help?  Please don't beat me up too badly for straying from topic of post!  Thanks much folks!

Also, I would like to add another vote for updated pics of a waterfall!  Smiley

you just type [ s ] and [ / s ] around the things you want to put the line through... well minus the spaces cause otherwise it wouldn't have shown up at the symbols it would've just shown up as a line. LOL.

Hi ALL! Thank you so much for all of the responses! The tub is a big was tub from home depot, and all I did was drill some holes in the bottom for drainage- rocks might be a good idea, too, but i wanted to bea able to move it, so that would have been WAY too heavy! I just used various herbs, the same ones I grow each year- rosemary- makes a great tree (and can come inside for the winter, as it is a tender perennial)! Chive, parsley, sage, I also used various types of thyme and rosemary for "ground cover" as well as purple allysum (not edible) to edge the little pathways, hen and chicks (don't eat these either) and african daisys (again, don't eat!) The upkeep is pretty simple, unfortunately the garden didn't get as much sun as I wanted, so many of my herbs this year didn't so as well as I had hoped. Full sun works best, and containers dry out pretty quick, so check frequently. I used miracle gro moisture control potting soil and it worked well. Also, use your herbs, or their growth gets out of control (I sort of have a monster parsly plant right now!) I recently have been doing some fall cleanup out there so I will take a picture soon. Thanks again everyoneGrin
